Do Spiders Breathe ?

Having a conversation about flushing a house spider down the toliet (cruel I know but my wife is terified and demands the ultimate sanction) we posed this question does it breathe ?

Answers:
Spiders breathe through something called Lung Books, on their front palps IIRC. They arn't insects, so they dont use skin osmosis. Some even swim, using bubbles of air as 'diving helmets'
Yes.
As an insect, it breathes through the skin. That is why you get rid of garden bugs by spraying a mild, soapy solution on your plants.

But spiders are beneficial insects, so let her have her way!
yes
dony you breathe?
no, they run on really small batteries.

of course they breathe.they have four breathing organs underneath their bodies, two at the front and two at the back.

there you go.
Nah, they just hold their breath 'til they die, or climb back up into the toilet bowl. Goodness, just put the spider outside.
Not after I throw something heavy on top of it.

Has anyone out there saying to take it outside ever had the pleasure of a brown recluse bite? If this guy doesn't know if spiders breathe you could be telling him to pick up something that is dangerous.
Yes--they have what is called direct oxygen transport. Instead of the oxygen flowing to lungs like we have, their "blood" flows by spricals in their abdomen and pick up the oxygen directly for transport. This is why you often hear of animals like cockroaches living for days without their heads.
Yes!

You've just killed it! Although they don't have lungs, they breath through tiny holes in their body.
Yes they breathe. But not under water!
shouldn't you really be asking 'can they swim'?
I'd say, yes.
dont flush it down the toilet, take it outside
Yes, they breathe air, and they drown in water. In addition, if the spider is flushed down the toilet, it is GONE! Even if it were alive there would be no way for it to get back out of the sewer into the house.
Not the one ive just hit with a rolled up paper
I'm never surprised by the level of knowledge not exhibited by some of these questioners.

Does a spider breathe?!!!!!!

Ermmm. let me think...No. surely not....aren't they the first alien species discovered that exist solely on a diet of hydrogen and dylithium crystals?

By the way. don't flush them down the toilet. they are excellent swimmers and carry an aqua lung aparatus in a secret pouch hidden beneath their abdomen.

Furthermore it is widely believed that they mate with the aligators in the sewers to create 8 legged hairy snappers. so beware!

Do they breathe?

God help the future of this planet!

I hope that you haven't got the vote!
everything that lives breathes one way or another
spiders have four respiratory holes in the underside of their abdomens, called spiracles.

ofcourse. they breath through the underside of their body.
Yes they do. you know when you wash them down a plug hole, and they wrap up in a ball? Well, they're creating an air bubble so they can breathe under water. Thats why they sometimes crawl back out again. Squish 'em!

of cause even flowers breath everything that lives breaths
Oh dear me, of course they do!!!!!!!!
every living thing breathes somehow or another. even plants breathe.
not after i've finished with them!
