how heavy a tank can you have before having to reinforce the floor?

If you put the tank against a load bearing - that is brick wall and which ever way the foor boards run, mount the tank the opposite way and that way it will sit across the maximum number of trusses and an inch thick sheet of ply wood should be sufficient to beef up the floor boards

It depends on the strength and construction of your floor; if you are on a concrete slab, there is no practical limit; however, if you are on any sort of raised floor, you should consult a structural engineer.

your confusing. all i know is i have a 10 gallon tank with 4 fish in it, but i hate the fish in it. they are so ugly, the lady at the pet store game them to me for free. they are like pink goldfish, but they are not goldfish. and they have a red stripe down its body. its tropical fish and i hate them
I've got a 55-gallon tank on the second floor of a house in my bedroom - from what I understand, a gallon of water weighs roughly 8 pounds each, so I'm looking at 440 pounds plus the tank itself, plus all the gravel and decorations.. It's really heavy..
According to about.com, it weighs roughly 625 pounds filled. At any rate, I have no additional support, and I think everything's fine as it is.
