My boyfriend's mother recently bought some chickens but doesn't know whether they are male or female.
Does anyone know how to find out if they are male or female?
The chickens are about three months old..
Answers:
Half-sized chickens are referred to a bantams, the following website will help you identify if they are male or female.

wait till they are older birds are hard to sex when they are little at the best of times.
see if they have a tinkle or a tut tut
What was the colour of their eggs, blue or pink
Take them to a vet.
chickens are female and roosters are male...
Place a mirror front of them, the chicken which one stay long front of mirror mark it, thats female!
they should be started getting the combs on the topof there heads at 3 months of age.And the roosterscomb will be bigger then the hens.Easiest way to sex chickens.
birds almost always hold true to the color test. Ya' might need to wait a bit longer, but, males are always brighter colored than the females (pay attention to the peacock and peafowl, my friend)
check the feathers on their sides, behind the wings these "saddle" feathers are USUALLY pointy; hen feathers are rounded
(there is one breed of chicken that both male and female are "hen feathered"; can't remember it now)
by the size it sounds like you have bantams. i waited till my 24 got bigger then i found out i had 2 roosters
It depends on the breed. They are small because they are bantams. With some breeds the males are a different colour to the females, with other breeds they look the same until the males develop combs and wattles and start to crow, and the females start to lay.
You can go to the library and search for a book about the different breeds but I'd recommend you buy a care book as there's a lot to know. If you want the females to lay they have to be fed properly, and they need the right nesting boxes.
cocks have spurs on the back of there legs about midwayfrom the claw to the elbow of the leg
You won't know til they are bigger.sorry.
chickens (hens) are female and lay eggs and cockerels are male and do not lay eggs will need both if she wants to bread them.
