I have just been given a 6week old homeless kitten?
the people who owned her didnt want her,i dont mind as she is cute,ive had a lot of cats over the years but never a kitten so small,she seems happy and im playing with her and giving her lots of love.the man who didnt want her said she likes ham and soft cheese,is it ok to give these to kittens so small.im wary to give her these things but im i just being paranoid

Ham and cheese are Very VERY bad.. ham is high in SALT and cheese is a milk product, all milk products are bad for cats and kittens - the calcuim contributes to urinare tract problems and the lactose is VERY hard on their tummies..

Is the cat complaining? Do you think kittens always ate Kitten Chow from Walmart? I bet a few hundred years ago kittens ate all sorts of stuff, they are no different now. If they like it they can eat it, but dry kitten food is pretty good diet.

I would ask a vet what a kitten that young needs. I mean, they're not supposed to be taken from their mother until 6 weeks or older. Personally I would use food like that as a treat once in awhile and not as a regular part of her diet anyway. Like people have said, cheese probably isn't good since milk isn't. But ham may be a good treat ocassionally. It's great that you took her in, I hope it continues to go well.
i have rasied many many litters of kittens, even some that the moms wouldnt feed. no ham or cheese. it can cause many digestive troubles. milk,water,some dry cat food moistened with milk or water until able to crunch dry is all the kitten needs.

You need to go to a vet, make sure the kitten has proper vaccinations and such and the vet will answer all your questions (they went to 8 years of college for it!)

He gradually started eating a more varied diet but never cat food. He is now about 16 and still going. I would suggest that you cut out the cheese though as it may be too fatty. You could try small amounts of other meats if she doesn't like cat food. My cats really love prawns.

You should mix some of the KMR with a quality kitten food to make a gruel. This will soften the food and help the kitten chew it.their kitten teeth are not that strong. The gruel will also taste really good to them since it contains kitten milk. Use the bottle with some KMR formula whenever you find your kitten attempting to nurse on you (and it will!) By offering the bottle, you will comfort the kitty and can wean her gradually. That way she won't carry that nursing behavior into adulthood (which happens to cats who are taken from their mothers too soon). In nature, weaning occurs between 8 & 12 weeks, so your little baby still needs it's mama and you'll have to be a surrogate. Good luck!

Be sure and give her fresh water every time that you give her food. She should also have some toys to play with. Ask your vet what kind. Do not give her anything with buttons on it. Squash up some canned kittenfood with a little added water; after a couple of weeks she will be able to eat without it being mashed for her. Dont ever feed dried cat or kitten food before 6 months old- they can choke. Tuna with fine breadcrumbs added is nice, again, after a fortnight, leave out the crumbs. Dont give her cows milk; plenty of fresh water, and a small bowl of cat-milk now and again as a treat.
