I have just been given a 6week old homeless kitten?

the people who owned her didnt want her,i dont mind as she is cute, ive had a lot of cats over the years but never a kitten so small, she seems happy and im playing with her and giving her lots of love.the man who didnt want her said she likes ham and soft cheese,is it ok to give these to kittens so small.im wary to give her these things but im i just being paranoid

Answers:
ham is probly ok but CHEESE?!?!?!?!? dry cat food would be better and as she gets older you can start her on wet food a little at a time! you sound like a concerned pet owner not paranoid & thank you for taking it in i hate to see pets on the street or in the pound because people have no ... i'll stop right there
sounds a bit young i thought they should only have milk for 8 weeks check with vet
Ham and cheese are Very VERY bad.. ham is high in SALT and cheese is a milk product, all milk products are bad for cats and kittens - the calcuim contributes to urinare tract problems and the lactose is VERY hard on their tummies..
she should have KITTEN food only..
no ham and cheese. ..not good for digestive system
Do not give her that kind of food. Cheese can give them diahrea just like regular milk does. Go get her some kitten chow if she has teeth. If she does not have teeth yet you need to get some kitten formula. They carry it at Walmart.
Is the cat complaining? Do you think kittens always ate Kitten Chow from Walmart? I bet a few hundred years ago kittens ate all sorts of stuff, they are no different now. If they like it they can eat it, but dry kitten food is pretty good diet.
no, give her cat food, specially formulated for kttens.
I would ask a vet what a kitten that young needs. I mean, they're not supposed to be taken from their mother until 6 weeks or older. Personally I would use food like that as a treat once in awhile and not as a regular part of her diet anyway. Like people have said, cheese probably isn't good since milk isn't. But ham may be a good treat ocassionally. It's great that you took her in, I hope it continues to go well.
i have rasied many many litters of kittens, even some that the moms wouldnt feed. no ham or cheese. it can cause many digestive troubles. milk, water, some dry cat food moistened with milk or water until able to crunch dry is all the kitten needs.
i wish you the best of luck with you new baby!
I would just give milk and kitten food for now. They shouldn`t leave their mothers until 8 weeks. I should consult a vet if you are on a low income the PDSA will help you and give you advice. You will need to take proof of benefit etc.
No she is to young for that, just stick to kitten food, it is suitable from 4 weeks. You could also give sardines or a small amount of tuna, make sure that they are in oil, not in brine.
ask a vet.
This kitten is much too young to be eating hard food, much less food that is not even cat food. Milk should be the kittens diet for a while longer and then on to cat food. You need to go to a vet, make sure the kitten has proper vaccinations and such and the vet will answer all your questions (they went to 8 years of college for it!)
Years ago my mother was given a kitten whose mother wouldn't feed it. It was about 6 weeks old and would only eat tiny amounts of soft food, including ham. He gradually started eating a more varied diet but never cat food. He is now about 16 and still going. I would suggest that you cut out the cheese though as it may be too fatty. You could try small amounts of other meats if she doesn't like cat food. My cats really love prawns.
first of congrats-i too just got a kitten-but only 5 weeks old..we still have to bottle feed-lol!Ham and cheese should not be given to any cat never-the-less a kitten, table scraps can be vary harm-full!i would wait but since shes used to it,it might be OK,i would contact your vet-or any vet and ask them!Good luck!
You shouldn't give the kitten cheese or any dairy ever. The kitten should be eating just soild food by this time they usually are weaned at about 4 weeks old but shouldn't leave the mom until about 8 weeks. You should take the kitten to get shots and you could ask the vet about the ham I wouldn't give it but I'm not sure.
I found a kitten who was 4 weeks old at the time. I fed her kitten food since she was already eating solid food. She is now a healthy, happy 2 year old who has no interest in people food. It's not a good idea to give them the same food we eat. One, it's not good for them and two, they might start begging for your food.
KMR and baby food (ham) is good for them. At that age she will should be eating dry food and that is the best.
No, it's okay to be paranoid - give her good old kitten food. People food does not contain the nutrients that she needs to grow. And as the person who didn't want her, he was probably only feeding her what he had in his frig, he didn't go out of his way to get her the food she needed. Her delicate system can not properly digest ham and cheese. Plus, take her to a vet to get a good once over and start her on her vaccinations so that she doesn't develop any health issues.
Ham is awful because it's processed, smoked and contains excessive sodium and nitrates. Cheese is even worse because most cats are lactose intolerant. 6 weeks is very young. I suggest you go to the pet store and get some KMR (kitten milk replacement) and a kitten feeding bottle. The feeding bottle is necessary more to comfort the kitty than to feed it. You should mix some of the KMR with a quality kitten food to make a gruel. This will soften the food and help the kitten chew it.their kitten teeth are not that strong. The gruel will also taste really good to them since it contains kitten milk. Use the bottle with some KMR formula whenever you find your kitten attempting to nurse on you (and it will!) By offering the bottle, you will comfort the kitty and can wean her gradually. That way she won't carry that nursing behavior into adulthood (which happens to cats who are taken from their mothers too soon). In nature, weaning occurs between 8 & 12 weeks, so your little baby still needs it's mama and you'll have to be a surrogate. Good luck!
A six week old kitten can eat food, but I would avoid giving it people food. A cat won't get all of the nutrients that it needs from people food. I would recommend giving it kitten food.soft canned food. Just keep an eye on her and make sure that she is eating. You might also want to get some dry kitten food as well that you can leave out all day in case she wants to snack. Just remember that cats are not like dogs, they will only eat when they are hungry so don't worry about leaving food out for her all day. She may be a little needy because she has been separated from her mom early so just give her lots of love and she will be fine. The only long term issue you may have is that your kitten might not clean herself as well as she should.this tends to happen if they haven't been around mom long enough to learn proper hygene habits. Just give her an occasional bath and things will be fine.good luck with your new baby.
She needs Kitten food. She wont grow properly given that other stuff. Try the canned kitten food.
No that will make her constipated. When kittens are first weened you give them can cat food then gradually go up to hard when they can eat it,but get it food for kittens..
Hi,
I think that 6 weeks is too young for her to have ham and soft cheese. You are not being paranoid. What you should do is check with your vet. If you don't want to do this, there are very good kitten foods that are better for her. There is Kitten Chow made by Purina and Friskies. I don't know who makes it. I have never had a cat, but I love all animals so I'll share what I know. Ask your vet to recommend a good kitten food for your kitten and ask him to let you know how many times a day to feed her and how much to feed her. Be sure and give her fresh water every time that you give her food. She should also have some toys to play with. Ask your vet what kind. Do not give her anything with buttons on it. She will swallow them. You can ask your vet if it is O.K. for her to have a little milk if you want to because milk has calcium in it and that's good for building bones. Good luck with your kitty!
they need kitten chow it contains essential vitamins
I would recommend Kitten food from your local supermarket e.g. Whiskas or Felix, check on the box the min age, after a year they can have the adult cat food.
no definitely dont give her ham and not cheese, dairy products are hard to digest for cats,
she need to be on kitten food only, and water.
u need to feed her small meals and often as she only has a small stomach, at least 6 meals and gradually reduce as she gets older, dont listen to what princess jean said, about milk, you will end up with a kitten that has diarrhoea if you give her milk. whiskas, eukanuba, purina are all good food for kittens
Yes, personally i agree wit CF_, b/c i gave my dog that, and he like threw it up. i dunno bout cats, but i would advise against giving her those products until she's about a month. but the final decision is up 2 u.
My cat used to love cheese and ham and it didn't harm her at all. All the same I'd wait until your kitten's a bit older just in case.
Ham and soft cheese are a definite no-no for a small kitten, even if she does like them a whole lot! Squash up some canned kittenfood with a little added water; after a couple of weeks she will be able to eat without it being mashed for her. Dont ever feed dried cat or kitten food before 6 months old- they can choke. Tuna with fine breadcrumbs added is nice, again, after a fortnight, leave out the crumbs. Dont give her cows milk; plenty of fresh water, and a small bowl of cat-milk now and again as a treat. Thank you so much for being a lovely caring person and taking in this little person; I wish you many happy years together- you deserve it.
