Why are young goldfish brown and not orange?

Answers:
To help them blend in better.
A
The same reason that cygnets are grey/brown and not white. They just develope their colours.
There are lots of fish that are born one colour & change as they mature;just must be in the jeans;like 1st there was only levi strauss no look how mwny different kinds of jeans we have ;same is in all of life.
Goldfish become "Gold" or "ORANGE" when they become sexually active or mature

Its the same as when a baby duck or chicken is born (they born yellow) and only start to get bigger and colourful feathers when the mature

Once a baby goldfish matures, its scales turn to gold/orange
They haven't ammassed enough gold to make a complete suit yet!

It's rare stuff you know!
It's an issue of being too young to defend themselves. Rather than scare predators away with flashy colours they prefer to hide, so they are camouflaged.
Different species of goldfish start out in different colours. A small bright orange fish will be eaten in seconds. the darker the colour the better the camouflage
Interesting question, don't know the answer but does that mean a young gold fish is called a copperfish or a brownfish?
Well it is kind of like hamsters, when they are born they have no fur so they are naked, maybe goldfish don`t have scales tell a certain day or week, hamsters don`t get fur until the 14th day of their life.
all gold fish are brown as they decend from common carp, they will turn naturally orange as they get bigger
It is natures way of survival until they get big enough not to be eaten by other fish. As a matter of fact they are a clear color when first born then turn brown then orange.
I bought 5 feeder goldfish to keep as pets, and now they are all about 4in long. They started out as 2 gold ones, 2 silver/brownish ones, and one black and gold one. Well now they are all solid orange, except the black and gold one, which still has a tiny bit of black, which looks like it's disappearing. LOL Who knows?.....
Its so they can hide being bright orange is just asking to be eaten but bring brown or black you can hide and your not easy to see by other fish or birds
The actual answer to your question is.. The lighting. Some "goldfish" get more light than others. Those with the most light turn that beautiful Orange color, Gold is in between, and dingy silver color is the ones with the least amount of light. Or atleast that is what Petco told me!
