My dog ate a plant in my yard has vomited a little. Is this something to worry about?

I took him to the vet office yesterday, and they're telling me he may have a "foreign body" stuck in his intestinal tract and that when they were feeling around on his stomach he was in a lot of pain. But i was there for the whole thing and he wasn't at all in pain. I feel like they were trying to get my money, not help my animal. She wanted to start x-rays followed by blood tests immediately, and then possibly surgery. I think this is a bit extreme for a dog eating a plant and having an upset stomach. However, do you think there's a chance the vet may be right?

Answers:
Whilst unlikely it is possible. Dogs do often chew on plants, sometimes deliberately to make themselves sick if they're slightly unwell. Normally this is nothing to worry about, BUT some plants ARE poisonous to dogs.

I can't understand why the vet told you your dog was in pain. Vets are skilled people and there is a lot that they know that you won't, but you know your dog and if it's in pain you'd surely be aware of it too.

The problem is with vets is there are a wide range of standards. Some are excellent, some are not. From what you say, your vet does sound a bit dubious.

You seem to be a good responsible owner and you've done the right thing so far. If I were you though I'd DEFINITELY get a second opinion from another vet. Do this quickly, just in case it really IS serious.

After all this is over, it might also be worth speaking to the royal college of veterinary surgeons (website adress below).

It might be worth changing your vet anyway if you don't trust them. It's important that you have a good rapport with your vet.

Hope everything turns out ok.
No
I've seen lots of dogs eating grass and then vomiting. I'm not sure why they do it but it is probably nothing to worry about (unless the plant was poisonous) If you are still woried, maybe get a second opinion from a different vet!
Yes, indeed! The vet is just trying to squeeze some money on you! She is so over reacting. Do you know what kind of plant your dog ate? Don't worry about it as you were saying you were there all the time and your dog wasn't in pain at all.

Some animals e.g. house pet cat EATS plants to make themselves vomit in the morning.
yes but how sorry would you be if their were correct and you did nothing and then..
these are your choices, do nothing, let them investigate, get another vet to look at your dog, if you do nothing then you would feel terrible if something bad happened, depends which you would rather lose your dog or your money. try and get a second opinion if you can.
Cats and dogs usually eat plants or grass if they are feeling ill.
no but some plants are good for dogs keep them healthy!
You should look up what plant it is, maybe its a poisonous one.
What kind of plant is it? It's common for dogs to eat grass in the yard, and it makes them throw up. I've heard that it's something dogs do when their stomachs are upset, and I've also heard that they eat the grass and it upsets their stomach. Regardless, it's not bad for them, it's something that happens all the time.

If, however, he ate a tree branch or something that may be poisonous (which would be why they would do the blood test, I'm guessing), there may be something to your vet's concerns. OR if he continues to throw up, or if there's blood in the vomit, take him back. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry.
OK the answer to that question is no grass is good for you re dog ore cat but sometimes dogs do pick up some strange things plant wise there is only one plant that will make you re dog sick is golden Ivy but the dogs pallet has a defence sty stem there mouths that makes the dog recognise poisoners things normally
No if the plant is OK i would not worry
get a 2nd opinion and find out what your dog ate, the vet might be trying to fleece you but then again they might not - the occasional vomit is normal ish - continuous repeated vomiting is different, they may have happened to pick up a few mouthfuls of poisen ivy or similar that is effecting them, or just be constipated
it would be wise to make sure the plant is not poisoous to dogs. if your dog doesnt seem to start feeling better, then reconsider the fact that there could be more going on such as a blockage. vets determine pain by tensing of the belly, not necessarily vocal or other "obvious" signs of pain such as squirming to the touch.
a dog will eat grass or plants to help it be sick to ger rid of suming in its body but if your dog keeps eating grass or plants sumthing might be stuck and the dog cant get it out normaly. so if your dog keeps on with it get the x-rays dont to be on the safe side.
Vets! My dogs eat grass and socks and hankerchiefs and underwear and shoes and letters (not bills) and puke all the time.

If your dog doesn't go for a poo for 4 days or becomes very unwell, then go see a vet.

If everything seems ok then chill and have a glass of Chablis.
