How to get my pup to walk to heel?
Hi
We have a new Dogue de Bordeaux, he's a lovely little thing, he's 12weeks oldand just going out. When I put the lead on him he insists on grabbing it to chew and when we do get walking he wants to stop and sniff at everything. Should I let him do this or pull gently to keep him going. Any help appreciated. I've tried getting him to sit then walking a few steps with him but its not working.
Thanks
Answers:
Be patient for a start, dogs sense when you're uptight and anxious.
Try hold the puppy on a very short lead with its head near your knee, if the puppy strays, pull the puppy back GENTLY to re- assert your command.
Praise and reward for good behaviour, ignore bad behaviour and repeat your command again.
Puppies are like children, into everything, messy, noisy, learning at all times but also very loving when given the right affection and guidance.
good luck
make it a game and maybe treats a reward !
I would go to the American Kennel Club web site and find a place near you that has training classes. It's not just for your well being it's for his and all your neighbors. Better to do it now while he's young.

take him to dog-training school.
you have to go too, to learn how to manage the dog.
you need to get into how to train dogs.
take him to school.
it is the best way.
Hold the lead so you have the handle in your left hand and hold the rest of the lead between your right leg and the dog making sure their is no slack between yourself and your dog, (so he is close by your leg) then gently pull the lead back when you want to stop, by saying STOP at the same time, then tell him to sit, helping him, by pushing the bottom of his back down into the sitting position. Continue to do so, until he does it. If and when he does it, praise him, you know "GOOD BOY".
That's how my dad was told to do it at a dog training school and it did work eventually.
All the best.
Try coaxing him with a treat or some food. Also use the same word to get him to do what you want, this way he will get to know the word and what you want from him when you say it. Dogs are eager to please and if he does, praise him.
you are in charge when you walk the dog and you need to let your dog know this, pull him gently and keep trying the walk few steps because your dog will start to listen it just takes time good luck
