Are Jack Russells a good house dog.?

My wife is due to give birth in a few week and shortly after we would like a small dog, will a jack russell be th right choice.

Answers:
The Jack Russell is a happy, bold, energetic dog; they are extremely loyal, intelligent, and assertive. Their greatest attribute is their working ability, closely followed by their excellent qualities as a companion. Unlike some modern breeds, Jack Russells have one type, hunting. Hunting ability is bred into them. It is their nature. The unique personality of this feisty terrier is rapidly gaining popularity, but they are not a dog for everyone, especially first time dog owners. While adaptable to to a variety of environments, they are first and foremost bred to hunt.
Mr. Crane had Eddie on Frazier- of course he was given regular exercise! He seemed fine though. Good luck with the new baby!
Should be ok
nothing better my Friend best dog in the world and would be good for the two to grow up together good luck with the birth as well good luck to you both
no they r yappy lil critters

believe me yappy is the word

yap yap yap yap f**kin yap thats all they do !

they think they r so tuff and the funniest thing is if you ever wanted to hurt the person they think they are protecting when they yap at you randomly like the all do . you could so punt it like a rugby field goal !

terriers always terriers that give it the ''big'un'' at you for no reason

p.s. eddie from frasier is cool
we had a jack Russell and it used to try and hv it away with our legs.they r known as ankle nippers.
Hello

Yes they are scared of nothing and will bark every time the door knocks. The downside is they do not like leads and will pull like mad when you walk them.

Remember they are only mobile alarms and do not have the scare factor like a German Shepard. If thats ok then yes get one.

Avoid Rottweilers and alike they cannot be trusted with children. I don;t care what anyone says they are unpredicable !
yes they make good family dogs. get a puppy and raised it with the baby or if you get a adult dog make sure it is used to babies, very important! even good breeds if they are adults and have never been around babies or kids its hard to tell what can happen. just remember Jack Russell's are very smart dogs but have a lot of energy. good luck and congrats on the baby!!
No I wouldn't trust Jack Russells with a new baby, my wife new of an incident in Glasgow when a new baby was ripped apart with two of them in the grandparents house, baby survived but is scarred for life, her scalp and face were badly damaged.
Yes. I have had Jack Russells my whole life. Just make sure they get plenty of exercise! A good bit of training at the start will make life a lot easier. They are extremely loyal and like to be part of the action, open a cupboard and they will jump in.
Hmm from experience living next to one they are small yappy type dogs.

They make a ROW a LOT.

That's a bit of a lifestyle change isn't it? Having a new baby and a new dog to worry about at the same time. Wouldn't it be better to wait a bit til you're not both knackered from shouty baby before you have to start thinking about taking a dog for a walk everyday too?

Congratulations on baby though!
i have had jack Russel's and they bark a lot when there is a knock on the door sure put people off.they are loyal but may wake the baby up.good luck with your new baby
They are good dogs but active. I have a medium sized one. But seeing how you are about to bring a baby into the house I would wait for a while to get any dog. You will be both so tired from raising the baby. You would not want to get a dog and then give it up because you don't have the energy. Jack Russell's are like mini people, they get into things if they are not kept busy. They are very very smart. I would do a lot of research and wait at least 6 months to a year before you brought any dog into the house. Maybe you can volunteer at an animal shelter once things settle down with the baby. They always need dog walkers, and you would know what kind of dog would suit your lifestyle. Good luck and congratulations on the baby.
Jack Russells make great loving pets. Mine is fantastic, but our kids are 9 yrs and 12 yrs. They fully integrate with the family like their pack. This is the problem, they can be very jealous creatures. I for one would not trust my Jack with a Baby or Toddler as he would try to fit them into his pack order. He hasn't ever bitten anyone, but he is ferocious when he takes a dislike to someone!
To be honest, I would get something slightly bigger like a Beagle. They have a similar fun loving nature, but don't have the jealous side. If you get a short legged one, they are not much bigger and just as much fun. When I was 12 month old, my parents bought a long legged Beagle and he lived until he was 13.5 years old. He was like my best friend. (happy memories)
I knew a jack russel that had separation anxiety and tore and howled the house down even if owners were only away for ten minutes. They are companion dogs and are not happy if left alone. They also have a lot of nervous energy and need to be kept mentally and physically stimulated.

I always recommend King Charles Spaniel for kids because they are very docile and not neurotic or hyperactive. They are very good natured and forgiving. Ok they might look a bit odd but they are easy to look after.

One other thing have you considered how much work a puppy is? They are cute but they take up alot of time and need training or they grow up to have bad behaviours. You might consider adopting a child friendly adult dog
My sister owns a jack russell and loves her to death. Very very smart dog and very gentle. Her only downfall is that like most little dogs, she doesn't like kids running past her or being hyper near her. All 3 of my kids have gotten bit by her but not big bites, just warning nips. No blood drawn. I would consider this since your baby will grow up and become bery interested in the family pet and going after it at around the age of 7-9 months when crawling begins.
good companion, good pet, good watchdog, very smart little dog!
Heard say they are one of the best
they can make good house dogs but to be honest i wouldnt have a jack russel with a baby,i have a jack russel x and they are very feisty, hyperactive little dogs.your going to be busy with the baby and you proberly wont have the time to train it as much as they need.a jack russel that isn't trained is a nightmare and they need loads of exercise.they can also be very snappy which could lead to problems with your baby.there not very patient dogs when it comes to children.if your looking for a nice small family pet i would suggest a cavilier king charles spaniel as they are very gentle, easy to train, and love children and older people.good luck
they are small which is good but they are very jumpy and smelly but then all dogs are smelly
jack russells are really good dogs. but you should know that they are not really obedient. they are a bit willful sometimes.
Don't think with a new baby, that you all are going to have time to properly train a JR. They are very demanding and yap all the time. They are very demanding dogs and need lots of exercise. They can also be spiteful. Think you would do better with another breed. Check out the Humane Society or a rescue group for a pup that is somewhat out of the puppy phase (housebroken, walks on leash etc) Good luck and congratulations on the baby
with a new baby on the way i think you will have enough Soobie Doo to clean up ...without chasing after a jack russell..
Jack Russell's are good house dogs and i think a Jack Russel would be the right choice because they like kids.
they will dig at the carpet and chew the walls. At least my Brother's did this. Not to mention it is very territorial and does not care who it opponent is. I took my dog over Rott/Lab mix and the Jack Russel attempted to attack. Did not end well.
no!! they are small and sweet but i have a jack russel and they are lunatics!
very yappy, bark all the time even when someone walks past thehouse.
hard to house train too as in toilet training.
personallyt i wouldnt suggest getting a puppy if u r just about to have a baby, i didnt realise how hard raising a puppy would be, it is like having a =nother child but worse!
i had a jack Russell pup but had to sell it 3 months latter started growling at my Little girl could not risk it we now have a jack Russell cross Yorkie and we have had her for 1 yr now and not once has she growled because she is a mix dog the vet said they make better dogs
I have a Jack Russell great little character we love him to bits he is eight now so not quite so energetic, but a real good housedog they fear no one. But, although he has a lovely nature and is not at all nasty I would not leave him alone with my three year old grand daughter as he is jealous of her and I would not like to take the chance.
