Does any one know how to tell a phantom pregnancy from a real one?
my boy dog has had the snip although this was done prior to me getting him. He got tied on numerous occasions to my girl dog during her season and whan I took her to boarding kennels the lady there said that he cant have 'been done' properly as they shouldn't tie toghether, she said that sometimes testicles can be left inside dogs bodies. Now my girl is acting really funny and is hungry all the time. How do I tell a real pregnancy from a phantom one as if shes pregnant she will only be 4 weeks. I don't want to take her to vets yet as an ultrasound scan will cost a lot and will be a waste of money if she isn't pregnant. please help.

Don't ever confuse it with the more serious complication of Pyometra, which can also occur after a heat cycle, normally around 6 weeks later, this is serious and needs immediate veterinary attention.
The first time it can be a bit daunting even scary. Not just for you but your ***** too. If it is a first time for you and you feel uncertain of what is happening seek a Vet.
Phantoms what causes them.
A ***** goes through the heat cycle like normal, their body produces a chemical called progesterone, but for some reason their body keeps producing progesterone even though a mating may have not taken place. So in effect her body is telling her she is pregnant, it isn't a mental condition of your *****, that you can snap her out of. To her it is the real thing.
Symptoms..Some show a lot some show little. Some start straight after the heat cycle, some do nothing till the pups would normally be due, as I said all bitches are different.
The first obvious sign in most is the swelling of the teats, then just like normal, 1-2 weeks before they are due to whelp the teats can fill with milk.
She may dig holes for a den, scratch up paper, cart a teddy round, her appetite may fluctuate. When the whelping date comes she may whine, lick her rear/vulva and even pant.
Two things that don't normally happen are.Their vulva does not stay enlarged or get any bigger at the normal whelping time.
There should not be any discharge.
The cure of this problem..only one, Sterilization.
The blood test is pretty cheap.

wait a while and leave it and you'll know for sure when u have oodles of puppies running round yr house or not
If the dog is simply tied off/snipped, he will still think he is intact and may act as such, releasing pheromones and humping anything when hes up for it.
If she is pregnant, she will show no interest in the male and may even fend him off. If she isn't, she will still be interested in him.
How long have you had him? male dogs can still tie with a female, but not make puppies after they have been neutered. A pregnancy can be possible for about a week after the operation, but no longer than that. Is there any chance she could have been bred by another dog? If she has not been with any other males, and he was fixed longer than say 6 weeks ago, she is not pregnant, just having a false pregnancy.
all u need is a stethascope, the things drs use to listen to ur heart. Feel around her tummy, if u feel little lumps in there, its real, if u don't then its not.
Always check with the vet tho, that is the surest way to know
A male dog CAN achieve a tie even if he has been neutered. If the job was done properly, she isn't pregnant. Wait 64 days - if she doesn't have pups, then she wasn't. And if you get her spayed, you won't have to worry about it any more.
You should have been warned that neutered dogs are not infertile straight away, it takes time for all the sperm to die. So it is possible that your female is pregnant.
Orchiditis (one or two undescended teaticles) is usually spotted when the vet operates, and the testicle that is inside the body cavity removed along with the one that had descended. Its probable that the vet would have mentioned this to you at the time of the op.
As for phantom pregnancies, without a test even a vet has trouble telling, so get her a pregnancy test.
you cant tell unless you get the scan.do you not have insurance to pay for that sort of thing? most vets will now accept payment in installments if you cant pay it all straight up..otherwise you could just get the vet to listen with a stethoscope and have a feel of her belly, at that stage you should be able to hear the puppies hearts beating as it is halfway through the pregnancy.
