Ho do you train a German Shorthair Pointer?
We are just about to get a 7 week old GSP. I am interested in training the dog to 'work' although it will be only to help occupy and excercise to dog, we may enter compititions in the future? The dog, actually a female (it wouldn't let me enter the correct phrase for a female dog!!) called Cassie, will primarily be a pet.
But how do you teach a dog to point, flush, fetch, etc, etc. I am confortable with all the basics, like 'sit', 'heel', 'stay', etc. I am just unsure of how you would train the dog to work?
Any advice or recomended websites/reading would be very much appreciated.

You did not mention whether this is your first dog, and while I believe that you should purchase several books on training, specifically those aimed at training your breed of dog. Your best and smartest bet is to take this dog to professional training classes. They do not have to be expensive, call your local kennel club for more details. A professional trainer will TRAIN YOU to train your dog and let you know when you are doing things incorrectly (And it happens), also your new doggie needs to be properly socialized and the best way to do that is to take to to OBEDIENCE TRAINING! This way your pooch will meet both other dogs and other people. A famous dog trainer, Barbara Woodhouse, once said that no dog is properly socialized until it has met AT LEAST one hundred people. Keep this in mind when making a decision whether to train from a book or from a proper course!
