Does anyone have any advice information on Bassett Hounds?
I have been thinking about getting one recently, I have looked into all the breed info I can find, just wanted to know if anyone had first hand advice/experience of them?
Answers:
I like Basset Hounds, but as a general rule - they tend to be harder to train. A hound was bred to go in a group (pack) follow his nose and in general work on his own. The humans just followed along on the hunt. So - they don't take alot of direction well. But they are friendly, sweet, and mostly laid back. They do tend to be a bit more stinky than the average dog, so why don't you visit someone who has one.
eat them hot
My good friend has two Bassets. They are very sweet dogs, but I can't say they are the smartest dogs in the world. She's having a really hard time house training the younger one to go outside to do his business. They both have a huge problem with chewing and eating all kinds of objects. About a year ago, the older one swallowed a rock and had to have emergency surgery because it was too big to pass through his intestines. He almost died. He also chewed off and ate half of their wooden back steps! Maybe not all Basset Hounds are this way, but I don't think I would have one. I have had a Brittney Spanial and a Pomeranian (both deceased, sadly) and they were both very loving and very smart. Never had a chewing problem with either dog.
I had a basset, and he was raised with kids, so he was very friendly to children. He was also a lazy dog! He was loyal and protective of those he loved. He even tolerated my niece pulling on his.well, I'll let you guess that part (hint: not his tail or ears!) But as for your question, yes, bassets are good dogs.
I've had bassetts. First of all, if you don't like drool you might get another breed. They do drool. They're also scent hounds, so you need to keep them leashed and have a well fenced yard. If they pick up on a scent they may chase after it, even into the street. So, "trusting" him not to leave the yard and walking off leash is a bad idea. Otherwise, they're great dogs.
i had a basset hound as a little girl. She was called Emily. She was very soft natured but used to get bored easily because she was so large and our garden mustn't have been challenging enough for her.. she used chew things and my parents ended up giving her away. Sadly and i still never forgive them for this they just took her away one morning and i didn't get told about it or get to say goodbye. i have a lovely statue of a bassethound that i got when we had her and some lovely pictures of us together which i still cherish.
What i know of them is that they are lovely natured but need alot of love and walks lol they are not as dopey as they look :D
also because they are big if you let them on you furniture they take up the whole settee :D
