Can dogs such as Alaskan Malamutes and huskies be let off the lead?

I would love to buy an Alaskan Malamute, but I'm worried that they cannot be let off the lead when being taken for a walk. Is this true?

Answers:
Malamutes are sled dogs and incredibly strong. They can never be trusted off the lead. Even if their recall is very good never let them out of your sight while off the lead. They have a very high prey drive and will chase small animals (and sometimes smaller dogs) and can easily out run even a very fast human. They were used to pull freight and as such have very good stamina. The best place to let them off the lead would be a secure enclosed area.

I would recommend that if you haven't much experience of huskies then you research them THOROUGHLY and know exactly what you are letting yourself in for. Try visiting different breeders and meeting their dogs. Dog shows and race meets are good too. Siberian huskies and alaskan malamutes can make wonderful pets but they can also be difficult dogs to own. They are very vocal (howling), incredibly strong, independent (and therefore slightly more difficult to train), very friendly (no good if you want a guard dog), they shed their coat twice a year (actual clouds of white hair floating round the house), prone to digging, very good at jumping (you'll need a 2metre high fence) and they can be very destructive if they are not offered enough stimulation. I feel that unless you are going to train the dog to pull a rig (as a regular working sibe or malamute would run for miles every day pulling a heavy weight at very low temperatures) then perhaps a different member of the spitz group would be better, for example a samoyed or a norwegian elkhound. They are similar to huskies but are easier to manage. If none of this has put you off a malamute then please make sure you buy from a reputable kennel club registered breeder. And good luck!
yes but it is agianst the law in the usa!
All cities have different ordinances and laws-so check with your city first-but I'm pretty sure that when your out at a public park or area that most places have the leash law for the safety of your animal and others.
Any dog, regardless of breed, if it is well trained can be allowed off the lead at times.
There is no such thing as a bad dog, only a bad owner.
Why would you want to let your dog off the lead? Do you live in a rural area where your dog won't get hurt by getting hit by a car, or get spooked by traffic, or get frightened by lots of people?

When walking a dog, it should always be kept on a lead. To protect the dog and other people.
first of all make sure you train the dog well & take it to obedience classes. i know many parks that don't let ANY dog off the lead so i'd check around your local area to be on the safe side.

so long as your dog is trained there shouldn't be a problem, but i think if its a public place its best that it is kept on a lead because its other people in general that are unpredictable around big & what they would call "dangerous" dogs & even if the dogs trained well if it gets stressed it can spell trouble

i don't let my boy off the lead at all in case someone makes a false accusation against him. he's too precious to me
Malamutes are better on the lead or harness, as they will run for miles when let loose.
i had a huskies, they like to run away after taken off lead.i loose them for a couple days but of course i live in the country.still they worry me.
Any dog can be trained to walk off leash, but in most places it is against the law and punishable by a fine. the reason being that no matter how well trained your dog is, you cannot predict and prepare for all possible circumstances. If you have a husky type breed, they are very powerful and stubborn headstrong dogs, one day he may decide to run after something and ignore your commands which could lead to the dogs injury or death, injury of another dog (in which case you are liable if your dog is off lead) or injury of another animal or person. The absolute only safe way is to keep your dog on a lead at ALL TIMES, no dog should be allowed to be off lead unless it is in the middle of the bush hours from civilisation and even then you run the risk of your dog getting in a fight with a wild animal, getting lost chasing an animal or getting stuck with porcupine quills. For the dogs safety and the safety of other dogs, people and animals, you should not allow your dog to run free because no matter how well trained, accidents can happen and dogs can ignore you if they want. So please do not let any dog off a lead..
Where I live in the UK, there's a Huskie that I see regularly out on the common and the local woodland. His owner made sure it was trained for about 6 months before letting it roam freely. The dog does return to its owner, but is definitely more independent than any other breed I've come across.
In a fenced area, YEAH!! Just to run loose, NO!! ANY breed of dog should be kept on a leash when it is out of your yard. You can NEVER predict what or when something can happen that will scare the dog or cause the dog to take off after it. Then what? Hit by a car, lost? It is NEVER a good idea to just let a dog run loose too many things can happen. What if it bit someone? What if another dog took after it? With the dog on a leash you have some control over the animal & most situations.
It is ALWAYS a good idea to take your dog to obedience classes & teach it how to behave on a leash. WITHOUT choke collars or pinch collars. Those types of collars are ONLY for people who have too much dog to handle & who weren't smart enough to PROPERLY train their dogs how to walk & act on a leash.
Try letting him off the lead in an enclosed area and seeing if he comes back when called. If he does, then add a few distractions like small children or other dogs, and try calling him again. That will give you an idea of how he's going to react when he's out in the open.

We had a Husky/German shepherd mix who heeled perfectly and could be let off the lead. I still prefer to keep my dogs on the lead, though, just because it gives me more control if something unexpected happens.
If you train them, after a while they will stay by you.
no not as long as you train them really well, you will find people are very wary of them as they are big dogs,
These people who say "as long as they are trained" are crazy! Malamutes and huskies can NEVER be allowed off a leash! EVER. They are bred to pull, with strength and endurance, and are extremely stubborn. But I will say this..they are the best and most loyal dogs alive (imo) However they will not stay beside you, and are prone to chase and attack other animals. There is alot of info online regarding these breeds, check it out. The best advice I can give is this..they will run in a straight line until they are tired. Please, trust me!
Can i agree with Emma F its an excellent answer and what she has said is correct. I might add they are lovely dogs though and i don`t know what it would be like if i should lose mine. Good Luck.
