My rescue dog who i have had only two weeks bit a child on the arm should he be put down?
the dog is half blind because of cattaracts and had just been examined by my vet for the first time he was on a short lead and the two children were in the vets surgery running around him! is there no such thing as parental responsibilty? do you not expect to find sick and injured animals in the vets who might be under stress and could possibly bite an excitable unaccompanied child?
Answers:
no dont get your poor dog put to sleep put a muzzle on him when your out i had to when my dog bit a boy not bad but it scared the living day lights out of me we get stressed we have bad days so do dogs and it sounds like your dog has alot to deal with i have children and when im out ie doctors or vets i make them sit quietly and still poor dog i do feel for u both
No, do not put the dog down. Given the circumstances it was an appropriate response for the dog. The parents need to be responsbile for their children. I'm sorry this happened to you and the dog too.
I agree that the children should have left your dog alone, but I don't know what the law says.
no he shouldnt be put down. he was in the vets and feeling anxious, with children running around and the parents letting them stress out the dog even more the child deserved a nip.
No. Dogs, or all animals, if wounded or sick are extremely territorial and aggresive and may percieve the actions of young children a threat. That definitely doesn't make the dog dangerous for no reason.
perhaps there are reasons why he bit a child but once a dog bites a human im afraid thats it for the dog. what if it already has a history of biting people? or it bites another person?
No he shouldn't be put down- just be more careful and try to avoid rambunctious children. If he is around them, stay very calm(he can feel your tension or anxiety and it will cause bad behavior) and keep his leash very short so he knows you are the boss.
In this situation I place little or no blame on the animal. The children should be under parental control. Where was the VET? Animals in the surgery are his responsibility.
Sadly, in today's word there are too many parents whose children are blameless little bast*rds.
How bad was the bite? My dog bite my neice a few weeks ago, not bad, but enough to scare her for a lil while. Depending on the age and condition of the dog, I would say no. Just be careful when around children and let parents know when their children are around your dog. Some dogs are not meant to be around children, just like some adults are not meant to be around children.
No, give the dog a chance to settle
seems like you already know the answer and are just looking for support. so no, he should not be put down.
Not sure what the law says, i would say that he shouldnt be put down, as long as the kid wasnt seriously injured.
you need to take your dog to obedience classes where yoiu and the dog get proper training
wow, thats tough.what are the parents of the bitten kid asking for?
They were the ones who needed the leash unfortunately.
The poor dog was scared and on a lead and kids should not be allowed to run wild in the vet's office. Don't put him down; he reacted the way any frightened animal would. If he broke loose and went on a rampage you would probalby have to have him put down.
NO!! He should not be put down. Not only was he nervous, but new to you, scared, wanting out of there! You should give him another chance! Now days parents think their kids should be able to do anything at any time just as long as they are not bugging the parent! They run around in restaurants! I feel sorry for your dog and you, hope the neglectful parents don't sue u! Best of luck with your new best friend and thanks for going to a rescue to get him!
Well you should prob get rid of him because chances are that he might do it again
no.Anywhere else and my answer would be different.
I hear ya!
D*mn Kids!
If he did not break the skin and it was more a nip to warn the children I would just be aware of it when children are around.
We usually know when our rescues are not good with kids or if we don't know we always tell adopters. We will not adopt dogs that are bad with cats to people that have cats nor will we adopt dogs that don't like children to people with children around.
Take it to a pet psycologist/anger therapist.
Yes, put the child down. He obviously has parents who do not care about him and is going to be a burden on society.
of course not if the child bit the dog would the child be put down rember u need a licence for u dog do the parents need one for there kids no but who needs it most
Kill it.

Don't waste time & effort & EMOTION & money on a biter!

BEFORE you get your a** sued off would be a SMART move.
How *DARE* you idiots put DOGS before PEOPLE!?!?!?
I*really* dislike human-offspring but would NEVER allow ANY dog to bite more than ONCE!
Well, friend, in any case, human life is more valuble than animal life.Humans have pets and thats fine but animals have their "place" and thats not on equal standing with human beings.Should your animal be put down; I dont know it depends on a number of factors. Is your animal likely to injure anyone else again? Does he have a history of injuring others? Does he have rabies or any other contagious disease dangerous to others? How badly did he injure the child in the incident? You see all these factors play a part in what should happen. I hope whatever happens you'll be level headed and understanding of the circumstances.
Perhaps you should muzzle the dog when you take him out, this might solve your dilemma
This is not the fault of the poor dog, but the stupid bloody ignorant idiot who let a child run about where sick animals are. He cant see; he is in a strange place, with very odd smells and unfamiliar people, other sick animals of different species, and all he needed was somebodys badly behaved brat to grab him--- the poor dog was TERRIFIED. He should not be murdered because of this; take him home and give him lots of love; he has already had a rotten life without being slaughtered through another persons crass stupidity.
I don't believe in putting animals down unless there is NO other alternative. From what you've said, it wasn't an act of meanness, I think he got annoyed with those kids! Did it break the skin on the child? I would make sure I kept the dog away from children. Some kids don't understand that not every dog likes to play all the time. I don't let my kids go up to a strange dog, even in the vets offfice, until they ask the owner and only in a calm way. I try to teach my kids to respect animals the same way people should be respected.
I agree with all answers so far. Don't put the dog down. Parents need to learn to teach their kids NOT to pet strange dogs, and ASK permission. I think I would've bit the dang kids myself if I was there.....Just keep in mind though that your dog may be leery of kids, so keep a closer eye on him when your out with him.
I get so mad when I take my one dog to the vet. People assume all dogs are friendly, he hates small dogs & cats, and will kill them. He's an "alpha" dog, so other male dogs he might get mean with them also. I'm obviously aware of this, and try to keep him seperate, but people always want to let their dogs come up to him, to which I kindly reply to them, Um, he'll rip your dog's throat out, please don't let your dog sniff him. I just love the nasty looks I get.
My point is, the best dog could react badly under certain situations, of which the owner is not aware of until something bad happens.
Why would anyone put a dog down for defending him/herself?
NO DO NOT PUT YOUR DOG DOWN.
Would you "put down" a child for bitting an other child? No. So why would you "put down" your dog?
Poor puppy!
I'd do the same thing your dog did!
He's a rescue dog who likely wasn't exposed to children, or perhaps was tortured by them. He's half blind, he's in a scary vet office, and these kids were encroaching his territory.
In the future, if I were you, I would just assume that puppy doesn't like kids, and do what you can to keep him away from them. It's unfortunate, but your dog is likely smarter that the parents of those kids!
I applaud the fact that you rescued him. That's awesome!
Good luck
No this dog should not be put down. You had him on a lead, he's stressed being in a vet's office and he hasn't been with you long enough to feel totally safe yet, he can't see well and those kids were not under control.
I'm not condoning him biting, but kids have to be taught to act around animals. This dog was just looking out for himself. Now you know how he'll react, you can watch him in stressful situations. Hope he'll be ok.
I am sorry to hear such a situation occurred. I tend to side with the animals more in situations like this. In a perfect world, parents would train their children to be cautious around animals they do not know well- especially at the vet. You on the other hand have a responsibility to train your dog, and protect it from potential "situations". Since you mentioned it is a rescue dog- I assume you are not totally familiar with it quite yet- due to having it for only 2 weeks.
Coulda-Woulda Shoulda is not going to help you here. I hope that a receptionist, tech or other clients saw this happen and can back up your version of what happened--if the need arises.
Was the child's parents upset about the incident? Or did they recognize their children were out of control and UN attended?
*** Now for all of you who are going to flog me for siding with the dog- I am not saying the kids deserved to get bitten. I'm simply saying that just because a dog is in a public place does not mean it is used to EVERYTHING and that it will not react in defense or frustration. Parents please teach your children to respect animals, pet owners (most) try to have their animals behave around children.
