Why do dogs find it so entertaining to play fetch?

Coz they're stupid,. if you threw a stick off a cliff, would the dog go dashing after it without a second thought? yup, in a heart beat.

Because of the attention they are getting from you. It's not the game, it's the time spent together doing something.
They have what's called a "retrieval drive."
Dog's retrieve things; it's an instinct. They also like to do anything that pleases people and if they think you like it, they'll like it. Not to say it isn't about the attention.
I dont think they find it entertaining i think they are just eager to please people and love attention

dogs love to play not only fetch..when they retrieve what you are throwing its a reward when they bring it back.. dont forget they to get entertained when we throw the ball..foxi
Because they have hunting instincts. If they were hunting, they would bring back the dead animal.

They cannot read,play chess,shuffle cards-in fact the list of pastimes available to them is limited,
so I suppose "fetch" is one of the few options left.
i think its because you are the alpha and they obey you. it makes them happy that the alpha(you)is happy because then they can get(if you have other dogs)a higher status with the others and with you. it is also a way dogs burn off energy and there old "chase" intstincs are still with them.
