First of all, the breed name is shih tzu. Secondly, smaller dog breeds tend to generally lead a longer life. A shih tzu can range between 10 and 13 years of age, and like all dogs, the better care, the longer they live (sometimes). You do have to be careful with small dogs and short noses, the shorter their nose the more likely they are to have respiratory infections, kind of like why a pug is always sneezing and sniveling which can make them vary sick if not cared for. The shih tzu is prone to respiratory infections if not cared for in the proper environment.
It's spelled shih tzu and the average life-span is 10-14 years but they can live longer than that..Small dogs tend to live longer than the large ones, if given proper care of course. My little yorkie lived until she was 15, or older-she was a stray so I don't know for sure..Keep in mind that any dog is a big commitment, but these little dogs are really needy and will be around quite a few years.
The one we rescued was almost 18 when she died, lovely dogs and so funny with their mannerisms too.
