Horse question?

she had thrush in her hoof, she stamps on the floor as she in her stall, i ve had her for 12mths and she has only just started doing it. she has long feathers could it be mites?

Answers:
There are several possibilities, have a vet or preferably a blacksmith check her feet properly. It could well be mites, or maybe the thrush isn't completely gone, or it may well just be a nervous habit, it may be more serious then you anticipate though, so do have her checked properly by a professional
Are you sure the thrush has completely gone? If not spray it with purple iodine spray every day. She is a girl and her behaviour could be hormonal. I have a mare and she stamps her foot when something p*sses her off a little. If everything else looks fine, I wouldn't worry about it. If it continues for any length of time, get a vet to check it out. If she has long feathers, be very particular when checking for things like mud fever as the feathers can hide a lot.
cut the feathers back and check for ants etc in stall.
Stamping her foot could be just about anything. Check the hoof for any obvious signs of problems, if everything looks ok, then you're looking at well, anything like I said.
Usually they stamp a foot when they're p!ssed or bored, in which case get her some exercise.
Mites leave a nice crusty trail so if that is the problem you'll know pretty quickly. Mites usually occur on the shoulders and back, there is the hollow just above the hoof that can get crusty and infected by other things than mites, mud will do it as well. Just clean her up and have a look at her, the feathers can stay if you like them, if they are a pain to keep clean cut them off.
since she is mare, the stamping might just be anger or hormonal issues.
First I would make sure the thrush is completely gone as this can lead tomore serious problems. There are a lot of products out there but I find Coppersept works the best (it's green and don't get it on your hands, you'll be green for a few days!). Second, do you know your mare's heat schedule? If not, try to watch for other signs of being in heat and see if that is the cause. Third, how often is she is a stall? Maybe she is simply getting bored with standing around all day.Try some more turn out or get her a toy (Jolly Balls are great and you can find them for about $10). Good luck, I know it's an annoying habit!
hi. my horse bangs his hoofs and has plenty of feather unfortunately i found out the hard way , he bit all the fur and skin of his legs and was sore and bleeding. i called a vet i had to administer antibiotics and wash his legs but the best thing i have found to keep the mite at bay is front line. yes the same as what we use on domestic pet but on a larger scale. and for thrush i always use proxide (liquid) yes the stuff we use on our hair it kills the infection instantly.
use frontline dog spray it wont hurt it
I have a coloured cob that does it. An injection from your vet of ivermectin should cure it pretty quickly. It is usually caused by mites. Shires use a product called pig oil, which keeps the nasties at bay once they have been removed. You can get it on ebay. It also keeps the feathers nice and silky too.

Good luck
you mst get the vet to examine her. also..make sure you are picking her feet out at least twice a day.and don't make her stand in a dirty stall. Both these things are preventive methods of preventing Thrush in horses.but tell vet also. horses hooves need looking after
Maybe. Or, it could be just nervousness..I don't believe the Thrush could be doing it, unless she had it just recently..
Your horse would not be stamping her foot if it was thrush. Thrush is a potentially painful bacterial infection that gets irritated with repeated movement. I have only seen one case of feather mites and the horse had the same change in behavior as your horse. Eventually your horse will start chewing on her legs to alleviate the itching; if you do not take care of this quickly. Call your local vet.
It is probably not mite because they only occur in the ears. It could just be that she has a problem with the stall or something. Check with a vet to double check.
the stamping might just be a vice, but clip the feathers off, its not cruel and will make the hooves and surrounding areas easier to keep clean wash and dry and keep the mud fever at bay.
i work at a livery yard/riding school and this is what we do with the heavier footed horses.
no need to do it in the summertime though.
stamping in feathered horses is almost always mites which you cant see and are quite hard to spot in skin scrapings. frontline spray can work but you may need to lose the feathers to get enough into the skin were they live. I suggest you find an equine vet willing to give an injection of an ivermectin cattle wormer such as dectomax at 1 ml per 33 kg bodyweight .it is not strictly licensed for use in horses, but i have never seen any side effects
