My dog is nearly 13 years old and lately she has started to wet herself where she lies?
Is there any treatment for this type of condition?
Answers:
Sounds like spay incontinence, which often affects older spayed females. Your vet can give you hormone pills which will take care of it.
Take her to the vet, she might have dementia
the vet may give you some tablets....
Mate, she's doing it cos she isn't able to get out and do it - she no longer has the energy.
Talk to your vet, but it maybe time to have her put down.
have him checked by a vet he could have a urinary infection or it could be just old age
Yes there is take her to the vet it's probably kidney trouble but depending on the severity drugs can help
Sorry mate, shes on the way out.
You don't say what breed she is. but it sounds like senile incontinence. This can be due to a variety of factors and causes (is she fit, eating well, otherwise healthy..or drawn, picky, lethargic) and you really should discuss this with your vet.
Sadly no, as we humans and especially females incontinence happens as we get older. If she has been spayed or has had puppies this is far more likely. Our german shepherd was on tablets for this at it started at a very early age, but in later years when she had a heart problem it was important to get rid of excess fluid, so the treatments conflict with each other. Check out with your vet for the safest course of action.
It's doubtful 13* 7 = 91.
I'd be a happy man if I could last to 91 before becoming incontinent. Christ - I'd be happy just to live to 91!
I suppose you could put a nappy on her (unless you can get her to do pelvic floor exercises) but that might be nasty if a #2 comes along! Just get her a nice comfy bed with a few washable blankets and live with it.
I think it's just a case of old age and lack of bladder control. I'm not sure if anything can be done about it, I'd say taking her to the vet is your best bet!
The best thing would be to take her to the vet. In my opinion though, it seems as if she's just getting older. Just how older people need "Depends undergarments", this is totally normal. Hope this helps in any way.
P.S Don't ever let anyone besides an actual VET convince you to put down your dog, EVER.
a vet can advise something for her. so please take her to the vet. i hope it's not serious. so gd luck n be quick in taking to her to a vet. it might develop into something serious later
Some dogs do get incontinent when they get old, it's a fact. I used to have a dog that used to randomly wee itself as it was walking around the house!
I think some breeds are more susceptible to it than others.
Is it all the time or just during the night. My mams dog done this before she unfortunatly had to get put down due to ill health but the best thing to do is get up during the night and let her into the yard or garden as she might just be too lazy to be bothered to get up with been old.
you need to get her to the vet a s a p i had that with my dog i will say know more my dog was 13 dont want to worry you but take your dog to the vet
The vet can possibly give her something to help. If not, and if she isn't in pain, she might sport a diaper. I mean, if she still has some good years left in her, why not? If she is happy and feeling well otherwise, I say give her a chance with a doggie diaper. Incontinence happens to people and pets as we age. She can't help it. Don't assume that because of this she needs to be put down. Consult your vet AND your heart. Your vet and you are the only ones who can determine what is best for her.
My ridgeback is only 7 years old and she sometimes does the same thing. I spoke to the vet about it and she gave me a small container in which she wants me to catch some of my dogs wee. Have you any idea how difficult that is, she my dog turns around and gives me a dirty look and then refuses to wee. So far i have not been lucky , still trying though.:)) She the vet did mention it might be a bladder infection but will only be sure when i can bring in the urine.
it`s not uncommon for dogs of this age.
My dog who was the same age did this whilst she
slept and i suppose yours is the same but you don`t say.
Best thing to don`t let your`s sleep to long, get her up and take
for a pee.
They sleep longer and the bladder is weaker so it`s like
older people things just ain't tickaty boo as when younger.
I just put down my best friend of 13yrs.. it was one of the hardest things I ever had to do, my little Lhasa Apso Rachel could barely walk, then she started to pee where she slept and that was not her, I kept her alive for selfish reasons, realizing finally that she was suffering, it killed me, but it was time, you need to take your dog to the vet and see what they have to say. Sometimes it's hard, but in the long run it is what is best for your friend.
You need to take her too a vet, my dog started to do that she was 14-15 she had cancer and we ha to have put to sleep
its old age even old folk cant hold their water she may just have a weak bladder but also she could have a wee infection i would take her for a checkup and see which .the vet can give you something for her if its an infection...dont be tempted to withhold water as it will cause irritation to the bladder and make her wee more..also she will get dehydrated.the vet is the fist call so you know what you are dealing with...
Yes, take her to the vet. There's drugs the vet can prescribe to help with incontinence. He'll probably also want to do geriatric blood work (if you don't get it done annually) to check our things like her kidney function.
I would get her to the vet to have her checked. This is not uncommon in aging dogs.
Check with your vet, but yes, there are some treatments available.
PPA (phenylpropanolamine) has been helpful in some cases of female incontinence.

Our dog (12 year old female Mini Schnauzer) is also prone to incontinence. Oddly enough, she is on chlorpheniramine for allergies, and if she goes off her meds for a while, the incontinence returns.
One thing that we used that was a lifesaver (since the diapers were a pain in the butt to handle) were waterproof crib pads - they have fleece on both sides, but a plastic barrier in the middle so the moisture doesn't soak through. We put those in the places where she liked to sleep (couch, bed, etc) so that if she did urinate in her sleep, at least it was easier to clean up.
I hate to say this because I know you love her but I agree with Matt.
Sadly she is just getting older, it comes to us all. Let her out to wee more often. Also talk it through with your vet.
It depends! You should maybe get her urine tested, in case there is infection. It could just be old age, and her kidneys are getting a bit tired. No easy answer, I am afraid, but first step is to talk to your vet
Only thing you can do is take her to the vet and see what they say, and if anything can be done.
I hope I'm wrong, but it may be just her age - I think you should prepare to say goodbye to her.
