Cockatiels?
Both my tiels make a kind of grinding noise with their beaks, looks like they are trying to talk, anyone know what they are doing? lt's not when they are eating,so l don't think it's a chewing thing!

It is a normal thing they do when they are content. Means you are doing a good job with them :)
my african grey does this specialy around 11pm i think it is trying to tell me to go to bed so it can sleep try covering them over with a towel or something
my friends Derbyan Parakeet does the same thing. It is usually whenever anyone walks by at nighttime. Sometimes it can be different things depending on the bird.
Mine does the same thing. I asked the vet and she said that it was a specific communication. I noticed that he does it only in the presence of his best friend, a female parakeet.
Mine used to do that. Have they got a cuttlefish to file their beaks on? Imagine it being like your toenails when they get too long!
Their just playing with their beaks. Like a human would play with their tongue ring Etc.
Grinding their beaks is a sign of contentment. They're happy, content, and relaxed. it is nothing to worry about.
they do it when they are totally relaxed. All parrots do it including my big ones.
You should already have a book on this birds care and diet. Buying the right bird seed etc. Cuttle bones should also be placed inside the cage for calcium and beak care.

CUTTLE BONE
------------------------------.
An important source of calcium and other necessary minerals for all caged birds.
Aids your bird in sharpening its beak.
Simply attach the cuttle bone close to a perch inside the cage where your bird can play with it and chew on it. He'll do the rest

Theyr'e going mad because theyr'e locked up in a cage all day.
i had a cockatiel for many years and it is when they a digesting their food, they store the food in what you call a crop when eating and digested it slow and thats the sound you can hear. this happens quite a while after they have eaten they seed.
It means their both content/happy.
I had 2 cockateils and they did it all the time, mostly when they where settling down 2 go sleep.
Nothing to worry about.
They are grinding there beaks. this helps in keeping there beak in shape. this is like clipping us are nails [this help in eating]
