Yes if she were already on methadone or was a heroin addict.
If she came off heroin or methadone suddenly while pregnant the withdrawals could kill her baby. Therefore it might be safer to put an addict on methadone to make sure the drug level is constant in her system. This will do the baby much less harm than a sudden withdrawal. Plus the doctor/addiction team can monitor how much she takes etc and make sure the levels are safe. Much better than risking her scouring the neighbourhood for her next "fix" and withdrawing if she doesn't get it.
A mother who has been taking addictive drugs throughout her pregnancy might be told that her baby will need to be monitored in hospital for a while after birth (a few days) to make sure they are not going to have withdrawal syymptoms.
I know someone who had to take morphine (prescribed by a doctor of course) throughout her pregnancy for a pre-existing condition and was told her baby would be addicted, but the baby was fine. I myself was taking anti depressants before I got pregnant and was advised to stay on them as coming off would mean discontinuation symptoms (not the same as withdrawals but can be unpleasant) which could affect the baby.

Sure. Methadone is available through clinics that don't always require MD prescriptions. You're talking about heroin addicts here, and heroin turns baby's brains to mush. Methadone is the better option.

No sure actually. I imagine they would because babies that are born to herion addict mothers are usually put on methadone once they are born anyway to ween them off herion as they also become addicted to herion whilst in the womb and isn't methodone safer then herion.
no, they wouldn't. methadone is a very strong medicine, it could seriously damage the baby. If they do, whoever gets them should not take them.

Depending on the number of mls needed a reduction programme maybe followed, however the baby will more than likely be methadone dependent as it would be heroin dependent if sticking to heroin, and need specialist care when born. As you know heroin is extremely bad for babies in the uterus but going cold turkey is not an option as this can do even more damage even leading to miscarriage.
Hence the methadone, although not ideal, it is the lesser of the evils as it is controlled and isn't cut with all sorts of crap.
