Best baby bedtime routine?
What is best to ensure a good night sleep: dinner, bath ,reading cuddle, milk and sleep; and if so how long between dinner and bath. What is really the best for a 15 months old?
Answers:
5.15 Dinner
6.00 Bath
6.30 Reading cuddle with milk
7.00 Bed.
Ours is 18 monthsa and we now have longer between feeding and bed (used to help sleep).
Try to get him/her to eat a lot - they'll refuse when really done - may have to experiment different places.
Have some play time about 20 mins. Make sure bath time is a fine time too and use a nighttime bath wash.
Then go through a book (cardboard ones at this age with lots to look at), have a milk with lights low/off.
Should work.
my 2 year old has been doing the same routine (otherwise it would not be a routine?!) for about 18 months..
8pm bath
8:15 warm organic milk
8:30 bed with bed time book
8:45 lights out
7-8am wakes up
8:30 breakfast
13:00 lunch
13:30 nap
15:00 wakes up or woken up!
17:30 dinner
You need a couple of hours for their food to get through the stomach.
But any routine that works for you is good.
This is what I do for my 2 year old and have done all along.
Usually around 6:00pm we eat dinner, than at 6:30 we my other kids and I clean up dinner, than we have play time where my kids and I play and chase my 2 year old around for about 20-30 minutes. Than by 7:00pm I go and give him a bath with that Johnsons lavender and milk bath stuff, than I dry him off and dress him, and by 7:20 he's all dressed and brushes his teeth, and than at 7:30 I give him a drink of water and than I tuck him in bed and read him a book or two, than I let him watch his baby einstein DVD and by 8:00pm he is fast asleep and sleeps until I wake him up in the morning. This has been his schedule since he was about 4-5 months old. I think all the play time, running around and a schedule lets him get tired and he knows what is expected of him and a schedule. I never have any whining by him. He is always ready for bed by that time, plus he takes a 3 hour nap in the afternoon too. I think schedules and a regular bedtime helps him, and will help him in the long run. But it has to be the same schedule every day, even on weekends.
When my children were young I used to give them a nice warm bath and make them smell nice putting clean pyjamas on them. Then I would give them something to fill their tummy up, rice, rusks, ready brek etc then give them warm milk in their bottle (if they have one), or in their cup. Then snuggle them into me and as they start to doze settle them in bed. Goodnight Irene.
Dinner is not really a bedtime routine. It's a meal that should be given to all people. (smile)
I love the bath, lotioning, reading routine.
As they get older, cut a few parts of your routine out. Or you might wind up with a 15 year old who needs to cuddle before bed (wierd)
I say, that by the time she's 2 you should be down to bath and a 2 minute story.
we started the following routine with my now 23 mos old at about 14 mos.
Dinner
quiet time
bath
read books
lights out and cuddle
sleep time
we recently needed to adjust our schedule because she started waking up at night. So all we did was moved her bed time back an hour. She was just not tired yet. My child now starts dinner at 5pm, bath at 6pm, 7pm books and she is asleep by 7:30pm.
Don't rush the bedtime routine. It's a special time and it goes by fast. Don't worry your 15 year old won't want you to put him/her night night.
If your child is super tired it's ok to skip part of the routine. If my daughter is super tired, we don't read books we just spend extra time in the dark talking.
because little ones have no concept of time television is a good indicator for them as to what time it is.Cbeebies and nick junior always have the same programs on every day at the same time eg nick jr has backyarigans at 5.30 ,fifi at 6pm lille bear at 6.30 and the bedtime song at 6.50 ish. my kids(2yrs old and 4yrs) have always had tea at 5pm, bath at 6pm ,watch little bear and then when the bedtime song comes on they know that its story time and bed. They've never been a problem this way. This together with arelaxing bath and storytime should do the trick.
if that routine works for you do it. u know your own babies needs. i was always told leave it an hour between dinner and bath.
when our son was that age we`d have dinner, play a game or do something that wont get thm 2excited, have a bath, cuddle, some milk ,read a story, then lights out and leave the room with the door slightly ajar so its not in complete darkness.
my sons routine for bed is :
6:00 - dinner time (tea!)
6:45 - bath time
7:30 - book time
7:45 - calm time (with his bubble lamps and soothing water sounds in his bedroom)
8:15 - cuddles and last bottle of milk
8:30 - sleep time
then he usually sleeps around 12 hours!
i usually use a baby bubble bath with lavender to start calming him down in the bath! it helps!
hope ive helped you!
I have a 16m/o daughter and here is the schedule that works best for her. Dinner at 6pm after she eats she helps me clean up the house. I run her bath at 6:40 and she takes about a 10-15 minutes warm bath. After bath we brush her teeth then I lay her down on the floor in her room(with her teddy bear or Dora doll to cuddle with) and I dry her off, put lotion on, and get her dressed. Then we sit in a rocking chair in her room (the lamp is just on the whole time we are in her room so it isnt too bright) we say our prayers and then I read "Goodnight Moon" to her. We then give hugs and kisses and I put her in her crib and hand her another of her "babies" and tell her I love her and its time for night night and I close her door and tell her night, night again. She is in her crib no later than 7:15. And I start telling her after dinner what will happen next such as clean up time then bath and then night night with your Dora doll. This is the thing that works for us. I am pretty strict and make sure it is always in the same order and same time. Who knows if this will work when she is 2 though!
A good bedtime routine for a 15 month old should be:
5- 5 30 dinner
6.30-7 bath (calm, not very lively)
7 15 bottle/cup of milk with light low or hall light on and nothing on in bedroom.
7 30 bed.
You could read a book but sometimes at that age they get to stimulated with it and it has the opposite effect to what you want! You could try a book about sleeping, While you were sleeping is one that is calming. I didn't read before bed to my son until he was two.
My 2 yr old has been in the same routine for about 18 months but I had to adjust it slightly as I gave birth to twins who are now 10 months old. Now our routine looks like this & it works a treat for us but you need to find one that suits you
5pm - Tea Time, a cooked meal, all 3 children eat together
5.30pm - Bath, this used to be 6pm for just my eldest daughter but as it takes longer to bath all 3 I start earlier now
5.45pm - They all get out & it's a lot of fun chasing naked bottoms round trying to dry & dress them, I talc them & put them in their pj's
6pm - They get toys out to play with
6.30pm - We watch the Fimbles on Cbeebies which is followed by a story & the bedtime song, as soon as the song has finished my eldest runs into her room with her cup of milk, she loves bedtime.
7.30pm - The twins are fed a bottle of milk & off to bed for them
This routine works for me & my 2 yr old doesn't get up until 6am, sometimes earlier if the twins wake her, sometimes later.
If your child is bouncing off the walls at bedtime maybe a bit more active play is needed.
