My sick little guy, HELP im a 1st time mom?
My son is 1 month old and has a runny nose and lots of green mocus that i've been sucking out with a syringe, however he seems a little irritable. I think he may need something over the counter. His peditrican dosen't come in till tuesday. Is there anything i can give him now?
Answers:
I would take him to the hospital just to get him checked out. It might not be anything serious but Tuesday is a long time to wait. I'm a first time parent too so I know how you feel!
If he is running a fever over 100.3 take him to the nearest prompt care or ER, he may need antibiotics since the mucous is green. 1 month is kind of young to wait until Tuesday. Don't give him any meds for the first time without consulting a Dr, PA or nurse practitioner first.
if the mocus is green he has an infection, the little guy will probably need some anti biotics, try to get what u can out and give him tylenol, but if he gets worse, get him to dr. somewhere..
it's always best to ask a doctor. Most peditricians have an on call doctor. You can always ask them. But I have had 2 children and it's safe to give them infants tylonel (Cold&cough ) 0.4 ml my 2nd kid is only 7 weeks old and he was sick with a little cold almost 3 weeks ago and I would just give it to him when he was so stuffy he couldn't breath. Also a humidifier in the room helps them a lot
Wait to see your gp as soon as possible as green mucus is a sign of a viral infection. Make sure he takes plenty of fluids. Keep an eye on his temperature.
You have a sick baby and you are asking for advice on Yahoo !!
You can buy Karvol (I think it is called) that you plug into the electrical socket which sends menthol fumes into the room. Also, you could put Olbas drops on the pillow. I used to mix a tiny bit of Vicks with vaseline and put it on the chest, as well. Poor little thing.
He probably is miserable, he can't breath out of his nose. I would never give a baby that age anything without a doctors approval. Try a cool air humidifier in his room or a sudicare menthol plug in (avaliable anywhere). Also, running a hot shower and standing in the bathroom with him will help losen the congestion and help him breath.
IF all else, you can try a NON_MEDICATED nasel spray or make your own salt water and place a couple of drops in each nose.
Good luck!
Junior disprol in a bottle, (Calpol is from 2months plus I think)
Go to your local chemist, they should advise. I hope he gets better soonxx
I wouldn't give him anything since he's so young.
As long as he's not running a fever, diarreha,or vomiting it should be ok.Give him a nice warm bath and make him as comfortable as possible til you see the doc.If he runs a fever or starts having the symptoms I described, get him to emergency room.Keep doing the syringe thing when you need to.
If he's 1 month old and has a fever or if he is wheezing/coughing at all, then take him to a doctor today. Otherwise ask your pharmacist for a cold remedy and dosage for a 1 month old and take him to the doctor on Tuesday.
Don't give him any meds without talking to your pediatrician. At one month old he is too little to guess what dose and he could get more sick. Some things that have helped my little boys are, bringing them in a steamy bathroom and then sucking out their nose (steam breaks up the mucus), Johnson & Johnson makes a soap called vapor bath, put a little in a warm bath, a humidifer (you can buy vapor stuff to add to your humidifer). If your baby gets worse take him to a med center or ER. It might seem drastic but at one month old your baby hasn't had any vaccines and a cold can go from bad to worse in a small child quickly. A rectal tempature over 100.4 degrees in newborns is something you need to be seen for. Most hospitals have a nurse number where you can speak to a nurse as well.
Good luck, I know being a first time mom is tough. I am sure you are doing a great job, Keep your head up and remember sometimes extra snuggles make a world of difference in your baby's comfort :)
Your ped.'s office should have an on call doctor to answer all your questions. If he is running a fever over 100.3, then take him to the ER immediatly, because it could turn into pnuemonia. Otherwise, it really isn't that serious. On average and infant may get up to 9 colds or ear infections in their first year. It actually helps build their immunities. Keep sucking the the mucus out and use saline nose drops to help dry up the congestion. They are safe to use and you can find them anywhere. A humidifier works well, too. If you do not have one, turn on the shower for a few minutes and shut the door and let the steam build up. Then sit in their with your son for 5-10 minutes at time. It helps with breathing. Doctors will tell you not to give your child any cold medicine until they are at least 6 months old.
keep him in a cool place, hot places, bacteria grows
Give him some Tylenol. Don't stick a syringe up his nose, but gently wipe with a tissue - you could be putting more germs up his nose and indeed could damage his nose. Then take him to the doctor tomorrow - if the mucous is green it sounds like an infection which might need proper treatment.
I have 2 children. i think it's just a cold but they can be more serious 4 young babies, if he has difficulty breathing or is wheezing take him 2 the hospital.
4 now u can buy something like karvol capsules, u cut off the end and drop the liquid on2 a piece of tissue and leave it next 2 him, this will help clear his nose and is perfectly safe on small babies as the health visitor advised me 2 do this with my son when he had a cold at just 2 weeks old. but u cannot use things like vicks or calrub as these are 4 older babies.
all u can do therewise is be there 4 him, even small babies enjoy a cuddle with their mum when they r ill, it makes the world of difference 2 them.
good luck
I would recommend giving him infant tylenol for any pain he might be feeling. If you haven't given him any before, he will get the smallest dose. Then, all you can do is wait to see the doctor because it sounds like he may have an ear infection. Good luck. I have a two month old, so I feel your pain.
Don't ever give an infant over the counter medications unless they are prescribed by a doctor first. Babies are very small and do not tolerate medications like adults do, you could overdose a baby even on a small amount of medication that is made for older children and adults.
Your best bet would be to go to a pharmacist and ask what they would recommend.
Don't worry about asking for help, it's the best thing to do!
I wish him a speedy recovery and wish you all the best for the furute with your new little man!
go to ur stores pharmacy and they should recommend something for him thats not harmful to the baby
Stand in the bathrom with a hot shower on and let it steam up. That will help clear his nose. You can still call the Dr and leave a message with his/her service.
You poor thing, Calpol ( liquid paracetamol ) to take his temperature down, or liquid ibuprofen might be a bit better. Just keep him in his nappy or maybe a vest so he doesn't get too hot. Also cooled boiled water in his bottle so hes getting plenty of fluids. I wouldn't give him orange juice or anything like that as it might upset his little tummy. Hope he gets better, theres nothing worse as a mother seeing your child unwell and not being able to anything to help. Good luck.
it sounds like a lil cold with a infection because mucus is green you should take him to the walkin clinic or er b/c he'll probably need antibiotics hope he feel better soon hun
Green mucus doesn't always mean an infection. Mucus can change colors when has been sitting in the sinus cavities. You are doing the correct thing with suctioning out his nose.
He will breather easier if his head is elevated.
If he sleeps in a crib raise the head of the crib up one notch.
If he has a swing put him in a swing or even a bouncy seat.
A boppy pillow would work too.
Due the risk of SIDS a pillow or anything like that should be used to raise his head
Keep an on his temp. Hopefully he'll get over this soon
take him to your GP as soon as poss. He may need antibiotics
keep him in the fresh air as much as possible, when a baby has a green nose this is an infection, still ask the chemist, put a small amount of carval onto a hankichief and tie it to his cot at night,
take him to your dcs before giving any meds incase he is allergic to any thing best to be safe than sorry he reallt is too young for meds so if there is any a dc could prescribe them keep him warm an well fed will probably be fine just have him checked any way put your mind at rest
i would contact your local hospital if he has bright green mucas then that is a sign of infection so it is better to be safe then sorry
good luck & take care
You can take him to the ER at the hospital to see a doctor there for some antibiotics because green mucos is a sign of infection.
Remember whenever your baby is sick and it is the weekend.take them to the ER at the hospital.
Call your pediatrician's office - the call will either be forwarded to the on-call nurse or there will be a message with the afterhours number to call. The on-call nurse will take down baby's symptoms, give advice, and page on-call dr if needed. Even if nurse doesn't offer to do that, you can ask that the dr call you. He or she will advise what to do - btw, when taking temp of this age child they usually want you to do it rectally (rather than with those nifty ear gadgets.) Don't feel bad about calling - that's why the peds always have someone on call.
