It could be a family name, the mom or dad probably likes it and it's not as bad as some of the other names I've heard.
They name the child Randall and Randy is a nickname for it.
You have to consider possible mean rhymes and nicknames for any name.

What is the big fascination with names? Yes the child will be stuck with it forever unless they decide to change it but if it's not your kid then who cares?! My 3 children all have relatively "normal" names but that's my opinion, someone else may think they're stupid! It's really no big deal if you ask me (and I think you did), you may like the name William but I hate it, we're all different, as long as the child is clean, fed, & happy who cares?
It's just a nickname my best friends hubby is called Randal.
