Is it common to suffer from dry, cracked nipples in early pregnancy or is it unrelated?

I have just noticed that my nipples are getting dry and cracked but not sore. I wondered if anyone else had suffered from this as a sympton of early pregnancy or do you think its totally unrelted? Also does anyone have an idea of the best creams to help clear it up?

Answers:
Yes I suffered with it in both my pregnancies and after! While pregnant try putting on white soft paraffin ie vaseline on them. This will help prevent scab formation which hurts when knocked and will help them heal.

As long as you are not allergic to lanolin you could also try using Kamilosan which is a chamomile based cream which is safe to use when pregnant and breastfeeding. I am allergic to lanolin used kamilosan and got a lovely rash on top of the dry nipples! Lovely!

There is also lansinoh which is supposed to be good though I've never used it, which claims to be made from a highly purified form of lanolin and therefore less likely to cause a reaction for lanolin allergy sufferers.

Once breastfeeding leaving some of the breast milk on the nipple after feeding help prevents sore cracked nipples.

When washing try to avoid using soap or shower gels etc on your nipples as these are very drying. Pat them dry with a towel after.

Good luck!
get some moisturiser on them. Vitamin E oil is good.
Progesterone can make your skin dry up or get more oily. Each pregnancy is different.

I had that problem all throughout my pregnancy. It never hurt and never got sore and was never really a problem. I've had the baby and sinc then it's going away.

I wouldn't worry about it. If it does worry you or it starts to hurt then tell your doc.
it didnt happen to me.
I NEVER GOT CRACKED NIPPLES AND MY WIFE HAD 5 PREGNANCIES.
When my wife was in early pregnancy she used baby oil on hers,i used it on mine too just as a precaution
I guess so.if u are suffering from it.lol
mosturiser would do the job.or even olive oil
yess i had it too, i suffered really dry skin on my whole body and found that the only thing that really worked (also stops/gets rid of stretch marks) was a moisturiser called palmers cocoa butter. not the one specifically for pregnancy but the cheaper one, just the normal moisturiser.
Cracked nipples are more likely occur when you are nursing. I would suggest that you check with your doctor.

Lanolin worked best for me!
yes it's normal, I found that vasaline helped. But after the baby is born if your going to breast feed They sell special creams down the baby isle, which would also work now.
it's normal, put brandy on it it helps.
yeh thats normal, just put cream on them every day, i just used mousitriser cream i had around the house for dry skin.
yes i think it is my friend use to use cabbage leafs to stop the soreness but to be sure check with your gp first dont just take my word for it.
yah its normal, just vist www. pregnancy .info for more details.
yes this is normal. ask your doctor or midwife to prescribe you something to put on them. or u could try to squeeze your nipples to get some of the milk out? this helps
I did.mine itched like crazy as well. Its hormones. I used a cream called Lanisoh. Its like a very thick vaseline. You can even use it when you are nursing. It will moisturize your nipples.try it its great
i think its very common, get some moisturiser for them preferably with vitamin E in, will help them keep moisturised xxxx
