Ive just been told i have a 1 in 285 chance of my baby being downs after having a cvs scan, help!?
Answers:
1 person in 285? Thats quite low darling, I wouldn't worry. I know easy for me to say but look at the odds.
Don't let this cloud the rest of your pregnancy, enjoy it and if the worst happens there is help and support..
Good luck hope the baby is well.
are those odds specifically for you or is that everyone?
Go on line and research, next explore your own personal feeling about the possibilities. Meet w/ a counselor who can help you sort through the options and provide additional support and resouces.
i wouldnt worry that much. 1 to 285 is quite low
that's a low percentage. The odds are in your favour. Good luck.
That's still quite a low chance, but there other tests, such as amniocentesis which can determine the outcome with much higher degree of predictability; although the procedure itself carries risks. Please talk to you midwife or Doctor.
Thats really low dont worry to much try and enjoy your pregnancy . I would be more concerned if it was a 1 in 10 chance .. Even so a Downs baby wouldn`t be the end of the world would it ? There are a couple here in my town and they are gorgeous ..
Please ask more questions!! I am an information junkie when it comes to my baby. The doctors are there for you to ask questions! That is their job. So please don't be scared to. I was told the same thing, and I asked, is that normal? Is he ok? And the doctor reassured me that is is completely normal and that the baby is fine. And I never gave it another thought. All this worrying you are doing for nothing. It is good to be concerned, but let that push you to be informed! YOU HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT! COMPLETELY NORMAL!!
I disagree with most of these answers : I think 1 in 285 is quite a high chance. Is the scan completely neccesary? What would happen if you don't have the scan?
wait until u have yr amnio centhesis (sorry dont know how thats spelt) test, that will determine 99% if your baby does have downs or not. Good luck.
julie i am sure ur very worried and i sympathise with you. 4 yrs ago a little miracle was born into my family....my downs syndrome grandson....yes he has had lots of problems, but we have coped and he is undergoing intense chemotherapy for leukaemia at the moment.
If ur child is born downs, your life will be rewarded 10 fold just by the love and happiness these kids bring with them.
i know i am a biased grandma but i do wish u and ur family well.
P.S
My daughter never had any tests so it was a complete surprise to us all. Good luck
The only real way to tell if you have a downs baby is to ahve the amnio test, its not very nice but you'd know for sure then. Ihad one with my second, and im not even 30, its nothing to worry about, although you have to lie down for two days! my baby turned out fine and all the tests they did said he should have had all the illnesses listed!
Don't worry and enjoy the pregnancy :)
What will be will be ..dont worry....downs syndrome children are wonderful....I have a severely autistic daughter... and I run a charity that take special needs children on holidays......if you get the chance talk to one of them and thier parentsthey are very loving ......dont worry....you can cope and you will cope
DONT WORRY
So what exactly do you need help with?
1 in 285 is quite low, if you are that anxious or frightened of having a child with Downs-sydrome, why don`t you kill your baby now, save you the worry of having a child with disability. Or here`s another great idea, abandon it to the state, don`t be ashamed of your narrow-mindedness, lots of people do this.
You maybe asking, what gives me the right to judge your whingness, three children, one with Downs and I work in a children`s home for mentally and physically handicapped kids that c###s like you, leave their unwanted "problems".
When I was expecting my second child I was told there was a 25% chance that he/she could have down syndrome as on the scan they'd picked up the thickening of the back of the babies neck. I was advised to have a CVS which wasn't pleasant and involved more than a weeks wait for the results which didn't determine anything either way as enough cells hadn't been obtained.
After further consultation with the doctors I decided not to go ahead with an amniocentesis due to the risk to the baby and thankfully my son was born with only a small hernia which repaired itself as he got older.
The decision whether or not to have any tests is a very personal thing and although the odds you've been given seem quite low, I'm sure this doesn't stop you from worrying. Good luck.
dont dwell on it that is very low risk. Stressing about it will only raise other potential problems. The baby can fell your stress and thats not very fair. enjoy your pregancy and all the little milestones it will all be worth it in the end. Concetrate on names on keeping healthy.
hi im just guessing her but if you had a cvs test you are over about 35! the thing with this test is as with most early pregnancy tests is it gives a high rate of false positives (about 8% are false positives) this does not neccessarly mean you will have a downs child. this test only test for certain proteins and hormones which can often show predisposition to this condition but does not mean it is a definite. The 1 in 285 shows that out of every 285test only 1 baby is born with downs. the only way before birth to get a definitive answer is by amniocentesis which involvess removing some fluid from around the baby as this contains it dna and having it genetically profiled. If you need anymore help please mail me and remember your midwife / doc / nurse are there to help you along with any further questions aswell amd are always willing to help out after all they always expect you to go back for info after being told something like this as you never know what to ask when first told news
That's quite a low percentage why not speak to gp or health visitor
