Do birth control pills have any side affects, and if they do how harmful could it be?

I'm an average male, so please bear with my ignorance upon the matter.. it's just my girlfriend decided to use these and, well, just want to make sure that they do the job without any risk for her health.
thanx

depends on the type of birth control pills. They can make you gain/lose weight. Clear skin or make it worse. If she smokes it could make her more prone to cancer. If there's not the right amount of hormones in the pill for her there may be spotting during the month
No risk to her health. The side affects would be weight gain, alittle nausea but that is all really. Some women get hair on the face and things like that. But it is good that she is on it.
They have side effects. When you take that many hormones and then stop them it causes harm to the body. Especially over a long period of time, it could lead to infertility. You might want to do some research on it, I can't think of exact effects right now.

[Edit] There's also (a slight) risk of blood clots, heart attack, stroke.
The birth control pill is a safe and effective method of birth control. Most young women who take the Pill have none to very few side effects. However, the side effects that some women do have while on the Pill include:

irregular menstrual bleeding
nausea, weight gain, headaches, dizziness, and breast tenderness
mood changes
blood clots (rare in women under 35 who do not smoke)
Some of these side effects improve over the first 3 months on the Pill. When a girl has side effects, a doctor will sometimes prescribe a different brand of the Pill.

The Pill also has some side effects that most young women are happy about. It usually makes periods much lighter, reduces cramps, and is often prescribed for women who have menstrual problems. Taking the Pill often improves acne, and some doctors prescribe it for this purpose. Birth control pills have also been found to protect against some forms of breast disease, anemia, ovarian cysts, and uterine cancer.
Birth control pills have hundreds of possible side effects, ranging from death to infertility to reduced sex drive. Not every woman will have every side effect, though. I don't know if any research has really been done into the side effects of eliminating a woman's menstrual periods, either (a side effect of the pill that *every* woman has; bleeding while on the pill is *not* menstruation). If you want detailed information, please read the book, _The Doctor's Case Against the Pill_ by Barbara Seaman (no, I am *not* making this up!). It has lots of information. The book was originally published in the 60's but there's a new edition that was updated about 10 years ago. See sources section below for a link to the book on Amazon.com (but buy it anyplace you like). The same author had a number of other books on the same subject.
yess they have side affects. very harmful messes her insides all up and it wont help her soo tell her that it isnt not a good idea.. any questions ask your doctor.good luck
My birth control pills claim they may cause chest/leg pain (Very rare), minor weight gain, possible blood clots (Rare), lung/heart/liver problems (Extremely rare).
the potential health risk is insignificant compared to the benefits.
yes they do talk to your Dr
Yes they have side effects, make sure she consults her doctor so she is aware of these. When I was on birth control though it helped me in all the right ways (every girl is different), it made my breasts larger, skin clearer, and helped regulate my period so I knew the exact time it was going to begin. One of my best friends wasn't so lucky though, she was constintly sick and gained quite a bit of weight until she switched to another brand. Good luck!!
Don't take them, they make you gain a lot of weight! It's scary!
