Taking Responsibility?
Do you think that if children were able to take more risks when young i.e. be allowed to climb trees, build a go-kart, build a den etc etc life being so sanitized these days, would they learn that if they do X then Y will happen & therefore understand that life has consequences? Perhaps if children learned to take responsibility from a very young age they would grow up respecting themselves more?
What do you think?
Answers:
I think there is a very fine line between teaching your child responsibility by letting them take risks (good) and letting your child get by without boundries and expectations (horrible). It is VERY difficult to provide those opportunities for children AND guide them at the same time. Most parents are willing to let their kids "take risks" but they don't want to monitor the behavior that occurs while doing it. We have friends whose children are allowed to do nearly anything under the "we encourage risk-taking" catagory, but the children have only learned that if they do X then Y (mom and dad will ignore us) will happen. X will vary, but that Y is what stays constant. Do you think they have learned anything about responsibility? Nope. Kids do NOT learn things by osmosis. You have to help children, especially young ones, see the connections between X behavior and Y occuring.
I agree, I also feel that parents need to teach them discipline and responsibility. Kids these days just don't care because everything for the most part comes easy. No one really has to work extrememly hard anymore to get anything.
Makes me want to go live in a cave and fend for myself. hehe
I agree with you 100% Letting kids learn my making their own mistakes through experience is the best thing in my opinion. As a parent, I choose to protect my children, though not being an enabler in the process. There is nothing wrong with giving your children room to grow on their own. Maybe if more parents today take the time to discipline their children & teach them responsibility for their actions, this world would become a better place. Too many kids today rely on & blame Mom & Dad for their problems.
Absolutely! Learning from experience is immeasurable and can bring about positive results. As for children, as young as they are, should be taught to make choices for themselves and be allowed to take risks. Overall, that is what life is all about.
Since experience is the best teacher, our role as parents should not go into the shadow. We are to take steps ahead and be able to think ahead. It would be favorable to let our kids explore and find things out for themselves, but of course, with our much needed guidance and support.
By the time our kids grow up, their sense of respect towards their parents will be there. Once in their young minds, they knew that there was someone who guided them through their early lives, and was supportive and caring enough. The respect that they will have towards their parents are to be earned and not something that was just put up. Let children learn through their experiences. Even if it involves risks.
Amen! I wish more people would butt out of how I wish to raise my children as well. It's better that we (my husband and I) teach our children about responsibility and consequences than society. By the time that happens, I could be identifying my child in a morgue!
You are 1000% correct! I wish more parents would understand this. Most of today's kids are WAY overprotected. Then when some little thing happens to them they can't handle it. Supervise? Absolutely! Smother? Never!
