Ultrasound or just a scan?

I went to the doctors and had a scan were they went across my stomach they couldnt see anything in my womb so they inserted something inside me and they foudn the baby.is this an ultrasound or just an internal scan?

Answers:
There are two different types of ultrasound one is external and the other is internal. If the external doesn't see the baby, they use the vaginal one.
no an ultra sound is a device placed on your tummy and a picture pops up and everyone can see the picture and what you have described is a scan to see if there is a heart beat, almost like a motion detector.
it is a vaginal ultrasound.it sometimes gives a more accurate picture. The thing the put inside you was an ultrasound probe.I have had lots of those. Contrary to popular opinion, an ultrasound can be done on top of your tummy OR vaginally.
An ultrasound is where they put the jell on your stomach and put the scanner on your stomach and view it from the screen.
Same thing- however you had an internal Scan ( ultrasound) because your not far enough along to use regular ultrasound over your stomach..
anything under 8 wks-12 wks this is how they usually would do the ultrasound
an ultrasound and a scan r basicly the same uve just had an internal one coz the baby was probibly lying very low in ur womb dont worry too much
ultrasound scans during pregnancy can be abdominal (on your tmmy) or vaginal (internal). Once a baby grows to a particular size it can usually be seen with an abdominal scan and the routine scans at 12 and 20 weeks are done this way.

In very early pregnancy baby is too small to see by an abdominal scan and in order to get closer and a better image an internal ultrasound scan is used. This is a transvaginal scan (TVS).

On a TVS you can often (but not always) see a baby at about 5 weeks after it was conceived (so a week after the first missed period) but it is only a few mm in size so seeing the heartbeat can be very difficult or even impossible so people are often called back for another look when baby has had a chance to row some more.
if you are under 12 weeks it can sometimes be hard to see the baby on a scan so the vaginal scan will pick up on the baby . hope all is well and good luck
You had a vaginal ultrasound. I know because I had one at 13 weeks. My Dr. said that they would go ahead and do it that way because it would be easier to see the baby at such an early gestation. I didn't have another ultrasound until 29 weeks, which by that time it was more than big enough to see the baby through the external sonogram. I'm kinda surprised that you let your Doc stick something inside you without asking what it was first! Anyways, Congrats on the baby and Good Luck!
Something inside you? Was it like a camera? If so it might be an endoscopy.

A CT scan would be entirely different, when you go on a "bed" type thing that moves into a tube/tunnel.
this is a trans vaginal scan used to detect the baby when it hasnt moved into the pelvic cavity, usually before you are twelve weeks pregnant
"scan" is a slang term for ultrasound. What you had today was a transvaginal ultrasound. They do those in early pregnancy because it's easier to see the baby. Across the belly is an abdominal ultrasound.
When I was about 8 weeks pregnant I went in for my first ultrasound and they always tell you not to go to the bathroom and to drink lots of fluids b/c when it is that early in a pregnancy it's hard to see the baby w/ an empty bladder but b/c I was so sick throughout my first trimester I couldn't keep anything down so every time I tried to drink fluids they came right back up so when I went for the ultrasound they tried the regular one where they put gel on your stomach and look but they couldn't see anything so she said b/c my bladder was empty they needed to put a probe in me (which is used for an internal ultrasound) it gives more accurate readings so she did that and they definitely saw the baby in fact she told me I was having twins (and now 3 years later I'm asking myself what have I gotten myself in to LoL)
I agree with Kelley. I had it done when I was 6 weeks pregnant as the baby was too small at the time to be seen with ultrasound over the tummy, this was they found the baby.
They performed a Vaginal Ultrasound. It is usually used when early in the pregnancy when the fluid around the baby is still minimal.
Hi it's a vaginal ultrasound. If the sonographer can't get a good, clear picture then this type of ultrasound helps when the foetus is in a difficult position> Good luck.
It is an ultrasound, just done internally, it is called a transvaginal scan.
