Should teenagers be forced to stay at school until they're eighteen?

Teenagers could be forced to stay at school until they're eighteen.

Education Secretary Alan Johnson's looking into it as a way of improving
Britain's staying-on rates

Is it right or wrong and why?

Answers:
I think it's a good idea, but I don't think it's right.

Everyone is still entitled to their rights, however, children have to live by their parents rule until they are (in my country) 16, and most people don't graduate until they are 17 or 18, so technically, you would be infringing on someone's rights if you forced them to stay. Then it would really feel like jail. BUT - there are so many people who drop out, party it up, then go back, only to be behind in life. (And some don't go back). My parents made me stick it out when I felt like quitting, and I think it really helps build who a young person is. Teaches responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment. (and gives you a good sense of work ethnic).
Chained to the desks if necessary.
I don't think they should be forced to stay at school because who is going to do all the crap jobs that nobody with an education wants to do?
right because in realility it's the best thing for them
Ok, I'm not in Britain, but if a kid has already completed all the grades and they happen to be 17, are they going to force them to take senior year over? How does that work? Why wouldn't you let them go to college?

What's the definition of staying-on rate? Haven't heard that term before.

I was reading below, a lot of people are saying yes. Well, what do you do about those who's birthdays at the beginning of the school year? For example, I was 18 at the beginning of October of my senior year, (missed that darned kindergarten deadline by a couple weeks). So with this way of thinking, I could have just left. You still would have a lot of kids out there that haven't completed highschool. And frankly, these days, if you didn't finish highschool, or you only finished highschool you're still not going to find a very good job.
no. there are other ways of getting your high school diploma, at keast in the US. The same mold does not work for everyone.
Yes I think they should because as long as kids are given the opportunity to quit when 16 some of them will. Almost all drop outs would graduate if the law said they had to go to school until 18. I think its the right thing and we in the US should do it too. Of course if the young person has completed the high school courses ahead of age 18 then they would be done.
I think it should be made much more difficult to drop out, that's for sure.
Some life circumstances keep people from staying in school. However, a kid should not just be able to drop out without some really good explanation.
They are just kids, they don't know how a lack of education will truly impact their lives.
.You should stay in school until you receive a diploma. That is a smart reason why.
I think they should be yes! So many kids out there now a days do not try to finish things. School for one. The laws set up now are just keeping them from making a mistake in the future. I feel it is necessary for a child to attend school. I understand there are many who did not graduate. and I see they have also regretted not finishing school. I know you can go back or take a GED and I think that is good that they have that in force to but I feel a child needs to be educated at an early age. I feel they need to have the experiences of school, rules, learning, responsibility, reliability, etc.

If people start saying that children should not be required to stay in school to graduate then honestly this world is going to go hay wire!
I have a 17 year old that would not go to school. Utah has a law providing that a child under 18 must be in school. If the student is found out of school he/she may be taken into custody and returned to the school. Since I could not get him to go, I found a way to bypass the law. He had to sign and get signed a waiver releasing him from school. Since he does not want to go to school, he has to maintain a job and pay rent.

If they won't follow the rules and go to school, then they can pay rent like an adult.
no because some of them are real thickos and hold the bright kids back.
It is all a game of politics, they need 2 save some money some how!
Wrong - They should be transferred from school to the military at 16, for a period of at least 3 years.

This would give them self-confidence, independence, motivation, and a whole host of personal and professional development skills, but it would also free up more senior experienced military personnel to go and watch their buddies backs because of the messed up foreign policy of our government.
Wrong. you can force them to stay, BUT you cannot force them to learn. In fact, this action would most likely just disrupt the other students who are actually there for an education and want to learn. Why make them stay if it will only cause misery to them and others? In fact, what would be the point of forcing them to attend if they are not there to learn? I know that some people use school as a babysitter, but for a sixteen, seventeen, or eighteen year old? That is crazy. School is for instruction and learning. not daycare of delinquents!! While I don't like the idea of them "ditching" school to be lazy. I don't like the idea of them interfering with another student's right to an education.
As a parent, I feel that your child would not have to be forced if you from the beginning tought them that school is important for them to suceed in the future. Give Examples.

But then sometime there are child that parents do this to, and the child still does not want to go. I believe that you should force your child to go. You may have trouble for a while, but in the long run it will be better for not only you but the child.
no teenagers shouldnt be forced.
once your 16 then you have done all you exams and that and there is no need to stay on unless you want to get better grades.
once you are 16 you are classed as an adult whether you act like one is a different matter. if you are classed as an adult at 16 then you cant be forced to stay at school.
Yea I believe they should be 'forced'. I mean when they start working in the 'real world' they will begin to miss being a student anyway so the longer they're in it the better. I reckon that the youth of today are really bright but they waste it because they have so many other options available and are easily lead astray.

I reckon that if they are kept in school for longer it will be benificial to them and I suppose on a political level, the economy as well.
Yes I think kids should be made to stay on till they are 18.

Maybe some exceptions should be made for those that have apprenticeships or college courses but other than that the rest should stay in school.

I was encouraged to stay on by my parents and I will do the same to my daughter.

Only thing is tho, some families cannot support their kids through school and they are forced to leave and take jobs in Maccy's - maybe the Government should look at why kids what out of school so soon - some teachers are sub standard!
I think its wrong. Improving the staying-on rate by forcing kids to stay at school seems kinda stupid to me. What wrong with the way things are now? Its not like colleges and Uni's are empty is it?
I thought everybody had at least some choice in their future, and sixteen is plenty old enought to leave school. If people want to stay on and benefit from extended education then let them. If not, they don't benefit. Its up to them, or at least it should be.
No.This is not the right path for everyone. However, I believe it should be encouraged, not enforced though. We are all individuals.
Richard Branson has done well without "traditional" education!
Why not if they do not have a job to go to what else are they going to do, they can,t get benefits, child benefits stops. so there is no way of support at least if they are still in full time education they get child benefit until eighteen. I sorry but at sixteen you are classed as an adult and if you can't support your self as one and contribute to your society then stay at school. It beats staying in bed all day or causing trouble because your bored.
It has been proved in other countries, that forcing teenagers to stay at school until 18 yrs old, doesn't do anything for them or the school itself.
Some of them want to leave school as soon as possible. When they are forced to continue their studies they will only do it to fulfil the law. And in situations as these, students that are forced to stay in school only create more problems to the institution and to other students that really want to take their education further. In the end, you may have a country with good staying-on rates, but in fact it is all a big huge lie. If they want to drop-out, they should as long as they work, and make their contribution to society, rather than asking for benefits.
If by school he just means education of some sort, whether vocational, apprenticeships or possibly re-sits for people who got bad grades at GCSE aged 16, as well as the traditional A-levels then it might not be SUCH a bad idea.

Although, personally, I don't think forcing them to stay on if they don't want to is the right way to go about it.
It's wrong, children have very little tolerance for school at the moment, making them stay longer will only make the education system look flawed.

Also it has to be taken into consideration that there More young mothers/parents so is the government going to fund childcare to allow these people to stay in school?

AND we always need untrained people to do certain jobs, cleaning etc if these people are taken away from the work place what will happen?

ALSO teenagers are given the choice to stay on at school for free until they are 19, surly the people who want to continue their schooling do so already?

People are saying this will cut down the rate of unemployment, but this is just a way of manipulting statistics, they are still jobless!
I'm a 19yr old.. and I don't agree with that at all. I left schooling at 17 with a Diploma in Electronic Engineering..

You know what? I don't even use any of the skills I got from that, I am a self taught 3D Modeller. I make 3D items for games to customise them. (I do it for fun more than anything).

I am also a Website creator, all self taught. I also know Perl, c++, java script, php, VB, and more. guess what. self taught.

Nothing I do in life now comes from what I learnt from schooling. Don't force us and let us develop into what we will be some day :)
i think teenagers should stay in school until they graduate and if possible get a collage degree as well. they cannot get a good job without an education. do they like being poor cause that is how they will be without an education.i dropped out of high school and i hate only being able to ask paper or plastic or would you like fries with that. without a good education you wont get anywhere in life. ive heard you can earn an extra 200,000.00 in your life with a collage degree. you can also earn an extra 100,000.00 with a high school diploma
Every high schooler should graduate dear!
At least until they are completely done with school no matter what age that is.

I don't agree that 16 years olds should be allowed to drop out of school- what are parents supposed to do? They can't make them go then they end up having to support them while they just lie around and party on the weekends.

Finishing high school should be required by law.
They should be made to stay in school until they get training for a job with a living wage. I told mine you go to a vocational school after high school or college. Until you can support yourself with a decent job not one at McDonald's for min. wage.
The same question was when was someone an adult.
When they can support themselves and pay there own bills and move out on their own.
they gonna do what they want
