I had a 3 day birth (not wanting to scare ya!) and my lavender pillow came everywhere with me! I have no idea how but I still had it at the end it went in an ambulance and was in 2 hospitals LOL. It wasnt oils tho, it had the dried stuff in. Mind you - I got through alot of gas and air as well! I have been reading the replies with interest as I had wondered the same thing (im onto baby number 2) I think due to the mixed response it may be worth checking with a midwife, as I know alot of oils arent safe when preggers. Good luck!!
Essential oils are bad? SINCE WHEN?? When are people going to realize pregnancy is natural and normal and not some freak medical contition. Essential oils are awesome!!! Dont stop using them just because you are pregnant.
Aromatherapy is wonderfully suited to helping alleviate many ailments in pregnancy through gentle massage and the use of essential oils. Pregnancy can be truly amazing time, filled with wonder as your baby begins to grow miraculously inside you and joy at the anticipated arrival.
However, eight months in and unable to see your toes, constant backache, bloating and swelling, indigestion, constipation, tiredness, sickness, wild hormones and a whole variety of other ailments throws a shadow of doubt over the whole blooming pregnant woman image. Gentle massage with pure carrier oils and the use of essential oils can help alleviate a lot of discomfort and increase the pleasure of pregnancy
Essential oils are extracted from the leaves, stems, flowers, roots and body of plants and trees.
They are highly concentrated, often one or two drops is enough for a desired result. They can be used in vaporisers, bath, placed on bedding, clothes and tissues for inhalation, massage oils and spray bottles with water or floral water.
Using Essential Oils in pregnancy and labour:
Massage: Blend 2-3 drops essential oils with 10mls carrier oil
Bath: Use 4-6 drops in 5mls carrier oil or full fat milk or cream
Inhalation: Place 1 –2 drops on a tissue or pillow
Vaporisation E.g. Oil burner Place 4-6 drops of essential oils in water
Helpful Essential oils in Pregnancy:
Lavender (lavandula angustifolia)
Main properties: pain relieving, encourages cell renewal, muscle relaxant, tonic, antibacterial, antiseptic, antiviral, relaxing, anti depressant
Use for: backache, headaches and migraines, muscle and joint pain, insomnia, colds and coughs, depression, stretchmarks, infections
Roman Chamomile (anthemis nobilis)
Main properties: anti-inflammatory, pain reliever, muscle relaxant, antibacterial, calming and soothing to the emotions.
Use for: backache, aches and pains, headaches, wind/colic, constipation, breast pain and swelling, cystitis, nasal congestion, dry skin, to ease worries, irritability and stress.
Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)
Main properties: pain relieving, encourages deep breathing, rejuvenating, antibacterial, comforting.
Use for: aches and pains, stress, panic, anxiety, skin tone and stretch marks, meditation
Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)
Main properties: pain relieving, anti depressant, uplifting, antibacterial
Use for: Sadness and depression, cystitis, aches and pains, colic, indigestion
NOTE: Do not apply to the skin if going out in the sun within 24hrs unless you are using Bergamot FCF (Bergaptene Free-the constituent which causes sun sensitivity)
Geranium Pelargonium graveolens
Main properties: balancing, uplifting, pain relieving, improves circulation, anti inflammatory
Use for: backache, painful swollen breasts, cystitis, swollen ankles (gently massage towards the heart), colds, sore throats, infections
Neroli (citrus aurantium)
Main properties: antidepressant, antiseptic, digestive, sedative
Use for: digestion, wind/colic, constipation, diarrhoea, stress, depression, fear, anxiety, insomnia, stretchmarks
NOTE: Neroli is an expensive oil but well worth the investment for during pregnancy and when in labour. If there is one time to use neroli, it is in pregnancy!
Other useful essential oils include sandalwood, petitgrain (neroli’s ‘cousin’), rose, orange, vertivert, rosewood.
Rose otto, like neroli is an expensive oil, however its benefits are numerous and is particularly suited to use in pregnancy and labour. Rather than purchasing undiluted essential oils, you may consider a pre-blended massage oil that includes neroli and/ or rose.
I think they advise you not to breath in lavendar oil in early pregancy
Essential safety precautions: Lavender is generally considered a safe oil and can be used undiluted. It is an ideal oil for children, but should be avoided in the early months of pregnancy as a safety precaution. People with low blood pressure may feel a bit drowsy after using it. (from the website holisticshopuk.co.uk)
you can use a small amount on your pillow it will not affect ur baby but dont bath in it as it can drop ur blood pressure which is not good 4 the baby
You are advised to stay away from some essential oils when pregnant (such as bergamot), however, I believe that Lavender is safe to use. If you're still worried, ask your midwife - she'll know!
try putting a sprig of lavender under your pillow you get the same lovely smell and help to sleep but without the worry as to weather the oil is bad for you .. I have also heard two sides to the oil is bad story good luck and congrats
You mean the pillow on a bed? As long as u r not allergic, I don't think it is going to affect u in anyway. You have to be more careful with ur diet, exercise and other vices though. Pls consult ur doctor if u have any doubts..
mmmm lavender!!
helped me relax during pregnancy.. I love lavender everything.. even viewing the color helps me.. (and for some reason now, my 2 children love smelling lavender insense now) wonder why.. lol
No, not all essential oils are bad - lavender is fine. It is GERANIUM which you have to avoid- it is used for encouraging periods.

You should be ok dropping lavender onto your pillow. The problem is if the lavender gets into your system.
All oils are not the same - you have to be really careful as some of them can be abbortive. If your in doubt you really need to consult a qualified aromatherapist. Better safe than sorry!
I have been advised by my midwife to take lavender oil baths from my due date onwards, in order to encourage labour.. with this in mind, I wouldn't use lavender oil until this time.
I am a aromatherapist, and essential oils can be unsafe during pregnancy, but mostly only if it is applied to the skin, 2-3 drops of lavender on your pillow will not have any negative effects, as it is only inhaled and can not get into the blood stream. So that's should be fine for you. Do not have oils in your bath, moisturisers or massages.
I watched 'How clean is your house' the other night and the women on that said that lavender oil isn't safe for pregnant women, if it is absorbed into the skin it could be dangerous for the baby? Im pregnant and i wouldn't use it, don't want to scare you thou! im sure many pregnant women have used it and been fine!
i was told to avoid lavender oil until my due date because it can bring on labour.i would think it would be safe on pillow.
Lavender oil is not considered safe for use in pregnancy, as it is one of the oils which can have the effect of encouraging the uterus to contract (which is why some recommend it during labour or if you want to try and get labour going if you're overdue).
I think you're taking a sensible approach: essential oils are potent substances with active plant extracts which effect the body - in other words, they are a type of drug.
