Think of all the functions a smoke alarm has and think of the effect of a failure of each. Here are most of them (I think):
Power supply (house power or battery) - no alarm
Light source for smoke sensor - no alarm or false alarm
Light measurement for smoke sensor - no alarm or false alarm
Test button - no test or false alarm
Circuit to trigger alarm based on smoke sensor or test button - no test, no alarm or false alarm
Alarm buzzer - no alarm
Battery indicator light - no alarm or unnecessary battery replacement
You may well be able to think of others. If the analysis also includes identification of the failed function, the next step would be a table, flowchart or map that takes the technician from a description of symptoms to further testing if needed and identification of the suspect function(s).
