Why 'barred '7's'.?

Why has the continental 7's been imported into the UK? They, the continentals, 'bar' their 7's solely because their 'ones' have a downward 'tick' from the top of the number, which unless their 7's had a 'bar' on them they wouldn't be able to tell the difference. As we in the UK do not have this one 'tick' it is quite unecessary to 'bar' our 7's. Please stop putting a horizontal 'bar' on our UK 7's.

Answers:
I was brought up in India where I was always taught to bar my sevens, besides, I prefer the way it looks.
Language and writing script is always evolving, it may just be the next step. If it bugs you, dont do it, but I like it

Shut up. I always "bar" my sevens becasue that is how I was taught. Does it matter ??
Whaaaaaaaaaa?
It´s simply because on the continent most people put a downward tick on the number one which made it look like a sevene way tn so someone came up with the idea of putting a bar on the seven to avoid confusion.

Much in the same way the military put a diagonal slash through a zero so as not to be confused with the letter O, it avoids problems if you´re transcribing code or grid references.

Just like spelling over the radio or telephone usinc the phonetic alphabet: A-alpha, B-bravo, C- charlie and so on.

It simply makes life easier !!!!!
I think you are wrong when you say the continentals have a "tick" on their numbers, we also have this feature in this country, look at your keyboard.
Personally I only use a bar if when I write, there may be some confusion between a 1 and a 7 by someone who is unfamiliar with my writing.
This is not a recent thing! It can help prevent confusion and improve numerical communication. Remember your 'UK numbers' are of arabic origin anyway.
this is a question of style. are you trying to tell the world what is and is not good style?
Two words.

Chiilll oouuut.

I personally think that the extra bar does make a seven look a bit messier, but it's nothing to get "ticked" about.
It is even more important to do it now that we have fax machines. As you know the resolution on a fax machine is far from perfect. I only started 'barring' 7's and 'ticking 1's solely because of this. The difference between 1 million and 7 million is quite a lot wouldn't you agre?
