Is it more energy efficient to boil water for cooking in an electric kettle first, or from cold on the hob?
To cook pasta for example I would always fill my pan with cold water and bring it to the boil on my electric hob. My friend always boils his water in an electric kettle and then transfers it into the pan on the hob for cooking with.
I know his method is quicker - a 3kW electric kettle will boil in a minute or so, whereas on the hob a pan of water takes several minutes. My question is who is using energy most efficiently?
My hob is electric - maybe the answer is different for a gas stove..?
Answers:
Your friend's method is quicker because it heats the surrounding air less. (It's the way I do it.) So it should be more efficient. If you use a gas hob for heating a saucepan of water, a lot of the heat will go straight around it!
I dont even do that, I boil the water in the kettle then fill up the saucepan with the pasta in it, put a tight fitting lid on then wait around 20-25 minutes, by then the pasta is perfect and no energy needed!
try filling you pan with hot water out the tap and always when heating a pan of water to cook with put a lid on it while it comes to the boil.in kitchens us chefs alway use hot water or water heaters for our water, do to time being of the essence.i don't know about the cost efficiency though. and i prefer gas its more on and off unlike electric
yes this is more efficient. personally i go further, wrapping my kettle with dish cloths for extra insulation.
