Hi!
LaTeX on PCs
There are three points to make here:
If you have a computer running Linux, then LaTeX should be automatically available.
An easily downloadable version is available from here (http://www.miktex.org).
A very comprehensive archive is available at here (http://www.tex.ac.uk/).
Suitable editors for LaTeX
You can use any editor to type a LaTeX file, but there are few that have extra features:
If you are using the Linux workstations, the programme Kile is a very nice front end to LaTeX.
An editor specificially designed for working with LaTeX is WinShell (http://www.winshell.de/). It works under Microsoft operating systems.
An editor that works under all operating systems is GNU Emacs. It is automatically available under Linux, although you might want to add the AucTeX to make it work really efficient. For Microsoft operating systems, you can download it from the GNU website (http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/window.
Google either MikTex for the LaTeX distribution (the compiler) and WinEdt (nagware) or TexnicCenter (freeware when I last checked) for the editor.
im sorry but i dont know but have you tried google.com
Try using Google and downlaod from there.
It comes free with Linux distributions, so if you wanted to change you operating system. Also, if you use emacs (another linux program) as your editing program, and call the file file_name.tex, then it will colour the commands and make everything much easier to follow.
Once you have downloaded it, post another question and I can send you a template for a Thesis and another one for a Letter. These are much easier to use than trying to start your own document. You'll like the maths ability latex has. So much better typeset than anything Bill Gates has done.
sure, you can use Emacs if you like jumbo programs. Vim (and GVim - the windows version) can highlight latex code as well. And you will not hurt your pinky either.
I also recommend downloading WinEdt (not WinEdit, a different program). It is shareware, but you do not lose functionalty after the 30 day trial, it just reminds you to register with increasing frequency.
If you are new to LaTex, also think about buying the LaTeX companion, a great book telling you all about the features.
Have fun!
