If i drink alcohol while taking penicillin will the penicillin still work?

Answers:
The penicillin will still work but the great concern will be the irritating effect on your stomach. Penicillin causes gastric upset so if you add alcohol it will make gastric irritation worse, so use it with moderation if unable to avoid drinking while on the penicillin course.

The main concern on drinking acohol is when you get drunk and the tendency is you will forget to take the medication or miss the dose. If you get drunk, you are more susceptible to certain infections and your immune system might not fight your current infection as strongly as normal. So what is the point of taking penicillin. This won't give benefit and on the contrary it will aggravate your condition which will prompt you to repeat the course and if penicillin resistance develops, a higher generation of antibiotics will be required.
Have a look at this story in this link:http://www.rxlist.com/rxboard/penicillin.

Check out this site for complete penicillin information:http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/drugi.

yeah
It does not definitely stop the penicillin from working but will make its effects less beneficial, So best avoid it.
Get well soon.
No.
When you take ANY antibiotics you should never take alcohol. You won't have any weird side effect, but it just won't work. Which means that you have to start taking the complete course of antibiotics again. But before you take them again you have to wait a while..so it will be like a month or so before you get any better.

And once you start taking them, you must take them at regular intervals, and ALL of them. Even if you feel better half way through, you should ALWAYS finish the course or it will come back.
Alcohol is not recommended when taking any antibiotics, it reduces the effectiveness of the drug, and you may have to take another course of antibiotics.
this is so stupid of you
of course it won't work as it has to
nope.and very well could make you sick.
You should have been given an information pamphlet with your perscription from the pharmacy or asked the pharmacist when you were there about this problem do a search on a medical web site
A nurse told me about this a while back it does something so it is inactive or just washed through the system.
yes but the alcohol won't, whats more important?
it may not work or it could make you sleep you should take your gps advice . or ask the chemist.
The chances are, it will work but less efficient, thus you will have to take it for a longer period! Wich means the product is less cost effective, wich means as a tax payer Iwill have to work longer/harder to recuperate the cost!and you will also have more time off work wich will also add to the tax payers cost!and if you do not tell the doc the truth he may, also investigate other illnesses wich will add to the cost!. Making you one absolute complete burden, on the genuin honest tax payer. So why not just drink H2O for a few weeks and get back to work.
Probably not.

Alcohol will make the penicillin ineffective.

The whole goal of antibiotic therapy is to keep a certain level of antibiotic in your blood stream so that it can inhibit the growth of the microorganisms. This is why doctors always say you have to "take the whole course."

If you drink alcohol, you make the antibiotic ineffective, so you don't have this consistently high dose. You end up with a varying concentrations at varying times. This cuts the microorganisms a break and can allow some to develop a tolerance to the antibiotic.

There have been some strains of TB (tuberculosis) that have become drug resistant because homeless alcoholics have continued to drink while taking antibiotics, allowing the TB to develop tolerance to the drug.
Why didn't anyone check out the site posted by the first person. No the alcohol has no effect on the penicillin if you are taking certain kinds of the drug it can cause facial flushing.
no but the alcohol will
Why not just don't drink while your sick, any you'll get better faster, well actualy you'd get better at the normal rate the alcohol can slow recovery times and yes it can make antibiotics ineffective, Do ya gotta have it that bad, hell I been there myself, just a beer or glass of wine or two in a day should not harm ya that bad, but obviously dude, come on, if you get **** faced while your taking antibodies for a flu/virus etc.. what the hell do think will happen, come on ya'll, ya killing me..lol
as the side effect of drinking while taking anti0biotics tend to be throwing up, why would you want to.
penicillin is FINE with MODERATE alcohol. Other antibiotics are absolutely not (eg metronidazole).
Penicillins all work fine with alcohol.
Your Dr will say no as its best not to mix EtOH with ANY drug unless you have some medical training.
Ignorance is not bliss!

Most of you are jumping to conclusions which are ill informed. Alcohol will NOT affect penicillin effecitveness.

A few antibiotics should not be taken with alcohol because they interact. Just follow the link to www.gpnotebook.co.uk which leads to this statement;

"There is a generally held belief that alcohol should not be consumed while on a course of oral antibiotics. This advice is correct if a patient is taking metronidazole, cephamandole (may cause a disulfiram-like reaction), and possibly oral ketoconazole (may cause facial flushing). However there is no contraindication to the consumption of alcohol with other antibiotics."

Please get your facts right before giving other people advice!
it will eventually..but not as quickly or as effectively!!best to stop the booze whilst popping the pills!!
I hope it is not to difficult for you to remember that one should not drink alcohol with any kind of medicine.
