Nitric acid is not an easy thing to make - better look for a supplier.
If you need a little nitric acid, you can take calcium nitrate and add sulfuric acid to it; the CaSO4 settles to the bottom and leaves HNO3in the solution. Mixing AgNO3 with HCl also works, but I find going down to the local chemical supply house and buying a gallon of HNO3 much easier.

Not very easily unless you own a lab, it can be made at home though by mixing potassium nitrate (available pretty easily) and sulfuric acid (available in car batterys) and then distilling the mixture and collecting the nitric acid that forms.
You need to know what your doing though as this stuff can disolve your skin, also the KNO3 (potassium nitrate) is very explosive.

All glass apparatus has to be used as the nitric acid attacks rubber, cork and metals. A 'quickfit' flask connected to a condenser would be a good substitute for a retort.
