Limitations of conservation and hardy-weinberg theory?
Is it sensible to link these two? Having a small population violates the assumptions made for the H.W theory therefore I would imagine genetic drift would occur and therfore a possible bottleneck effect would proceed?
Answers:
in a small isolated poulation i think that new gentyoes would occur and possibly support your theroy of a bottleneck.
if you look at incidents hat have occured in the past such as rats populating a freezer storage unit you can see the drift in phenotype of the rats shifting towards rats with a thick wooly fur to protect from the cold, in this situation it could be argued that genetic driff from inbreeding in the small population within the unit has caused the formation of a new subspecies, but infact he environment and the restraints on the environment have caused the rats to become stuck in their environemt, a possible bottle neck.
or brown bears on an isolated island, the breeding has produced 2 alpha males and prevented the population from growing any larger.
it may be apprent from my rmblings that it has been 4 years since i passed my degree in zoology and the subsequent time in administration has made me forget a lot of the stuff i used to know, thanks for asking this question you have highlighted the fact that i need to relearn a lot of things as i hope to become a teacher in the next year and it pays to be in the know, i remembered a lot of the stuff but putting it into context sheesh.
