You can use a Gram staining technique on bacteria which would allow you to decide whether the cell is Gram positive or Gram negative. This is determined by how the cell wall is made up, Gram+ve will be purple, Gram-ve will be pink. This is an important feature in detemining pathogenicity of the bacteria and sensitivity to antibiotics. It also helps with identifying an unknown species of bacteria. This is a simple stain with the results being easily seen using Oil Immersion microscopy.
