You really need to choose what type you want to get involved in. There are two main types of Civil Engineering: Design (which is called Consulting) and Construction (which is called Contracting).
The best thing to do is to find local companies (try looking in your local Yellow Pages under structural engineering, civil engineering, consulting engineering and contracting engineering), to find the names of some companies which operate in your area. Then go and google/yahoo search their name to find some contact details. I'd recommend sending off a letter to about 10 different companies explaining your qualifications to date and situtation (i.e. doing civil at uni soon). You might get about 3 replies if you're lucky, and hopefully one of them will be a yes! If not, find another 5 or 10 and try again!
Good luck.
Have a wander around building sites in your own area, see if you can get a start as a trainee, learning the ropes with a gang setting out roads and paths and all the drainage aspects on site before moving on to bigger things..
Best of luck in getting something..
Your education and related work experience are going to be huge if you want to get into civil engineering. If you have a degree in civil or even a related field like architecture, land development, or even a science it should be no problem to get on board with a firm of any size. Check out career builder, monster, and Engineering News Record Top 500 (ENR) firms. The last suggestion requires a little time as you have to go to each firms web site and see if they are hiring.
If you do not have the education, you could possibly still get hired but it would not be in the capacity of an engineer. You would most likely be cad person or technician. These jobs aren't bad and can be pretty lucrative in the long run but if your goal is to design/analyze structures then these would not be for you.
Yes you can come and work for me i am renovating my house at the moment any good with a shovel?
The phrase Civil Engineering is quite vast.Three areas you can tackle; The Government, The Consultancy Offices and The Contractors.Civil Engineering could include Roads, Urban Planning ,Buildings,Landscaping, Bridges.etc.
Pick your pick and go for it.Good luck.
get an internship. Your school's career center might have listings of companies looking for interns. Also call or stop by local engineering firms to see if they need interns.
