Should we bring back rationing?
In the context of our resources, such as energy, water, etc.
Such that every person has an allowance which should be enough to sustain life, health and a reasonable level of comfort. Thus if you chose to use a gas guzzler car, then you would not be able to travel as far as the guy with the moped. You would have enough water to wash flush and drink per day, and if you chose to live alone in a large house you would only be able to heat a couple of rooms, instead of 10 people in a bungalow who could live in a sauna!.
OK, this is only a brainstorming thought, it is appreciated that it would be difficult to implement, but as a principle, it could be the basis for some sort of fair system perhaps, such that the rich would have to comply
Answers:
I think that if we don't do something to conserve our resources now, we will have to ration in the near future. This is certainly a viable solution, but, getting the rich to comply, just as it was then, will be next to impossible.
Your idea is good in principle, but far too fair for any Government to give a second thought to. It would, in a way, take some of the value out of money, wouldn't it? The government and rich run the country, so you would be assassinated for suggesting such an idea really! I like the idea though ;-)
Perhaps.
Sounds a bit like communism to me. which is an interesting idea. but it'll never work in practice becasue people are greedy.
Good in theory. I remember travelling in communist East Germany during the 1970s. It was a very equal society with everyone driving little dirty Trabants. ..... Except for the big black Russian limos for the politicians and army officers.
I am for less government not more government, I would never trust any of them
There are a couple of problems with rationing.
Firstly, the black market. People will find ways of providing items outside of the ration, and these people will be organised criminals - you'll end up buying your electricity from your local gangster.
Secondly, if your lifestyle is capped by the fact that you can only do so much with your energy allowance - you won't see any result from the extra hard work you put into life. And if you don't see the reward, you'll stop putting in the effort and the whole country will become a bunch of lazy layabouts.
Nice thought though - just the kind of idea we need to be debating.
Whenever you Ration - It feels immediately good that the very wealthy have been dragged into line but,
The state earning would drop as less taxes will come in.
So the less wealthy who felt secretly happy, would be the ones to suffer in the end.
It may help the environment somewhat.
In principle this would be a fair way of doing things, but a lot of thought should go into the fairness of this. For instance pensioners, and people claiming invalidity are at home for 99% of their time, how would this work, they need heat, electricity etc. just to keep warm. How would you propose that we tackle this one?
It's a great idea for every one to have a fair share but some would have a bigger fair share than others.
Good concept though also a black market opportuntity .. on a big scale for the mafia of the UK.
Someone in government whether be this or the next one must take the bull by horns and implement some unpopular restrictions on us all.
Other wise we will end up with haves and have nots on a far more significant scale than we now. Those who can buy resources will find a way and those who can't, well, it doesn't bare thinking about.
I don`t thinks it`s a good idea. I believe it`s necessary to change the world throught the education and not the proibitions. Like it was said here, the rationing would estimulate the illegal market. It`s necessary the conscientization, so the people will use less resources because they know it`s important to preserve them.
Yes. But not as harshly implemented as it was in the Second World War! We need more environmentally conscious people like you. We have too many billions in the world for the resources in it. The future of our environment is a scary one. If we don't act now it could be, and already is being, destroyed forever.
I don't think anything can stop mankinds headlong rush back to the dark ages. People are becoming more and more selfish, greedy, dishonest and violent. However you try to control fuel, water, food or wealth, the baddies will find a way to control it. It would be impossible to issue ration books because anything can be forged. You have to laugh, don't you?
For heavens sake, listen to yourself, another `greeny`.
Have a go at the brain dead in this world who don`t realise that your alter ego is precisely what the problem is, dipping one`s wick not only fulfills an animal need, (for the brain dead), but also creates at least another consumer of resources, That`s where the problem lies, and only there.
I took my family out the other day, wife, mother in law, father in law, guess what? bent the forks on my Honda 50... PRATT.
I think they should have ration books so people know if they are healthy or not but you don't have to use the ration books but you could use them to help you be more healthy and more eco-friendly.
i totally agree after spending the past 30 yrs trying to encourage employees to car share even dispite incentives you would be shattered if i told you hardly anyone still shares so i thought get tough time and said either share or dont take free car parking for granted anymore and we have introduced a scale to help in a small way all be it to reduce cars use share or pay to park ect is the way forward after all as you say we are faceing deperate future unless we conserve use less pay for use and get those 4by 4 off our roads
I think market forces give us a balance in life. Perhaps rationing of car fuel and tobacco would be of benefit
I think the idea of it is excellent but there are fundamental problems with it because its open to exploitation by criminals and the black market
Moreover the rich people in control won't like it so they will try and stop it AND a large number of normal people will dislike it because they're too lazy and selfish to be bothered to change
I think this is a great idea too. I think the people that matter think so too, have you heard of carbon footprints? well it is a start.
I reckon people with large families or the elderly should NOT be rationed.
I on the other hand should be food rationed cos then I'd be forced to LOSE WEIGHT! Lol
P OFF.
No.
I have worked hard for my Gas guzzler and I pay my heating bills.
Why should I have to sacrifice my way of life for which I have worked hard to achieve to heat and feed some spongers,
Get a job and then you can pay for the luxuries that you want thats the basis of capitolism, what you are suggesting is communism and we all know that that doesnt work.
The rich never comply.nice idea..but human greed never allow it.
Just so long as it applies in total to all our rulers. That should stop them gadding about and polluting the atmosphere.

I notice you say should we "bring back" rationing..when in reality rationing goes on all around us and even infront of us in 3rd world countries..therefore to suggest we should go back is the wrong statement in my opinion..
While we're brainstorming, how about completely removing money from the equation. No paying and no being paid! Would civilisation collapse or would we continue with less or more stress? If civilisation did collapse would we be able to rebuild?
what is your weather like?
