Should we sue car makers because of the pollution they have caused?

Answers:
Suing them is going a bit far. And anyway, people make the choice to drive despite the damage it does, so is it really the car makers at fault or drivers?
We'd end up with no cars if this was successful and in some places and situations driving maybe a matter of life and death (e.g. ambulances). I think a better approach would be to make energy rating compulsory as this puts the onus on the manufacturers to improve efficiency to achieve an A-rating.
I'm not saying this is the answer to everything. The public transport infrastructure also needs a lot of improvement. If it was more convenient to use people would use it. And they need to stop making stupid legislation suggestions about bicycles and improve cycle routes.
thats like suing mcdonalds for making pple obese or suing camel for making pple get black lung
You should just not drive a car, if the pollution they cause is a problem for you.
No Jim, we should sue you for posting stupid questions.
What are you talking about you nit-wit?

Who drives the bloody cars? you and me, pal, that's who. so should we be sued too?

You know what.. you bloody tree huggers make me puke! You can't stop progress, so stop trying to.

And yes. I drive a huge 4x4 kicking out its toxic fumes all over the place!
Ah yes, lawsuits! The modern answer to all that is wrong with the world.

Just can't get have too many lawsuits in life.
no, of course not. just start campaigns telling people not to use any heavily polluted gas
I think Arnie & co is on a Loser with this nutty Hollywood Vote catcher - I take it the Celebs - inc. Arnie will start Hoofing it from now on..No Chance.. This is like the Loonies who want to sue the Tobacco companies because "they themself "smoke.. mmm!! think I will consult my Solicitor this afternoon - about Sueing the Government about the Fumes coming out of the Public Transport Vehicles ..a wee earner I think. daft isnt it ?
The State if California just did. They have filed a "Global Warming" Lawsuit on Ford, Chrysler, Honda, Nissan, Toyota and General Motors. The suit charges that the auto manufacturers have made it impossible for California to comply with the mandatory emissions legislation, because they have not supplied the equipment necessary.

The floodgates have opened.
not fair dahlin,,, they just trying to do business. then you ll have to sue anybody and everybody around ..
enjoy what you have been given here on earth .
Why not sue the oil companys for supplying the fuel that runs the machines that cause the pollution?
the Americans have just announced to-day Thursday they intend to do that, but i see it car companies are the manufactures and the public are the drivers and its you who switches the engine on and off so how can they be held responsible, its typical of America sue anybody for anything. it wont stick.it would be hard pressed to sue any manufacture in the UK ! where are they?
who told the people who brought the cars to buy them. its not the car manufacturers fault that people buy there cars and also you cant prove that it is a particular comapany and if we did where would the money that was won from it go?
No, definately not.

We don't sue gun manufacturers because they are used to murder , do we ?

Its the drivers that are causing the polution. A 4 litre 4WD car is fine for going from your mountain home to the city once a month o get all your shopping. The problem is using it every day to do 30 mile commute to take the kids to school.
no..they made the cars, others purchased them and used them,it is these people who caused the pollution. gun makers make guns, should we find them guilty of murder when one of their weapons is used to commit murder?
I dont thnk we should sue they retrospectively, but they should have individual targets for reducing the pollution they cause now, with heavy fines and possible threats of closure if they dont meet them. This should be the case for all high polluters.
Ridiculous.

How about ambulances, fire engines, police cars.

Stupidity!!!
NO. Only California would even attempt something that preposterous. Why don't we sue Henry Ford posthumously? That would make more sense.
i believe they have a lot to answer for they could manufacure more energy efficient cars and less b***** diesel ones -if you get stuck behind a diesel in a traffic jam it realyy burns your throat and stinks
Its us who buys them and drives them. Its society in general which should take more responsibility as well as the manufactures, we do live in a market lead world where you can vote with your wallet. Don't go down the American route of seuing every one and everything as it deplete the little liberty and freedom of choice we still have in this country.

Do you want to live in a nanny state where we take no responsibility for our own actions?

So no we should involve the manufactures in initiatives to improve their efficiency and we ourselves should try to change our habits to use them only when necessary.
I have a better idea, lets sue everyone who has a car or had a car.
My grampa had a car before he died, lets sue him. I have a car sue me, you have a car-lets sue you. Wait, I have a better idea, lets collectively reduce pollution by carpooling, walking, public transportation, etc
Sounds good on the face of it, but where would it end? Is is just not practical. We demand the cars, and they supply. The only way forward is to try and educate people into trying to buy less polluting vehicles. Then, we will demand these cars and they will have to supply them.
There is a case that manufacturers are not offering the cleanest technology available.
see http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/02/1. for how even school kids have built cleaner vehicle options than the big manufacturers.

Instead GM et al now produces vehicles with worse performance than the model T, and re-grades them as trucks to avoid emmision regulations. while taking grants to investigate fuel-cells that won't deliver for 10 years (and have been promised "soon" for the last 10 too) but provide a good smoke-screen for doing nothing.

In particular GM has recalled and crushed their electric vehicles, despite customer demand, which could have met 90% of our personal transport requirements today using current technology.

The film who killed the electric car does investigate who is responsible.www.whokilledtheel.
