What would happen to the Earth,if the North and South magnetic poles swapped over.?

Answers:
Not much, other than compass needles pointing south.

What's really cool is what will happen DURING the transition, which by the way we are already in the beginning stages of!

As the poles begin to shift, the Earth's magnetic field will become weak and unstable. More solar radiation will reach the surface. There will cease to be any 'poles' at all. Instead, what little EM field we have will poke out at random and multiple locations. Auroras will be seen all over the globe. Compasses will be useless, as they will spin wildly in all directions.

This will continue until the field re-stabilizes in the southern orientation. It has happened before multiple times, is happening now, and will happen again.
Life will go on, no real danger, just alot of wierdness :)
Nothing - this occurs naturally every so often anyway..
Its just a scientific incling. theres not really a metal rod going thru the earth is there.
Once it has swapped over, it will be as it is now, only the compass will point in the other way.
While the poles are swapping, the magnetic field will be very weak, so we won't have much protection from electric particles from the sun. This may destroy much electronic equipment.
why does it matter. they wont swap.
the earth will break in two pieces. and u will have tu pay more to go to afrika! or southamerica!
Not only would it bugger your compass up but water would go down the plug hole the other way.

In the northern hemisphere it always goes down clockwise and anticlockwise for the southern hemisphere. This would reverse if the poles changed.
They do swap over. I'm not sure when but it does happen
It might be closer than we originally thought. Think tanks are only just looking at the problems now.
the earth would spin anticlockwise as to clockwise and time differences to gmt will be in reverse otherwise the same as before
There will be a huge variation readings on the earth. Variation are errors that are inherent to the earth. This changes will affect greatly on all materials that are dependent on the magnetic fields.Every location has its variation and it changes annually. All materials must be corrected to make it aligned.
It has happened hundreds of times already, we know this by studying dipoles found in the rocks.there is no evidence that it has had much effect on the planet as a whole or anything living on it.
Apparently, it is increasingly believed the shift in the Earth’s polarity is caused by such a change in the Sun’s. The sun is obviously not a rigid and solid planet but a gas body, and it has been determined, apparently (I don’t know how), that the equator is spinning at a higher rate of angular velocity than the poles. This results in the longitudinal magnetic flux density lines becoming stretched like a rubber band further round the equator.
It is this abnormality that, as a constant physical progression with time, can possibly explain the routine cycle of sun-spot activity, with repeats intensity patterns approximately every 11 years. It is also believed that when the longitudinal flux lines are stretched to a point where they cannot maintain themselves they break, reversing the polarity of the sun.
This reverse, again apparently, effects the whole solar system (as you might expect) due to the ionised radiation from the Sun being emitted from different poles. This is one primary hypothesis as to the reversing of the Earth’s poles.
water would go down the plughole in the opposite direction... amongst other things im sure.
Dunno about the Earth

But. I`d be pukin East and West
not much, compass needle will point the other way, that's it, and its happened before, cant remember how long ago but i think we might be due a switch in the next few century's, not certain about that though
Nothing at all
