Global Warming Protesters?
I'm sure you all know there were 1000's of protesters in London today that were demanding the government do something.
Well I ask, what the hell do you want the government of a small country like Britain to do about it!? It's USA and China that are the main threats. We can't make much difference.
If you're so concerned then do something about it yourself instead of lecturing us.
Answers:
Good points well made - but it is easier for the sheep to keep bleating in their own field than try to do something constructive elsewhere.
I wonder how many of the protesters also protest about nuclear power - and given half a chance would moan about wind farms too. Sorry we need power and until the idealists can come up with a viable alternative, things aren't going to be changing anytime soon.
Much as I dislike our present government, it is hard to know how they can realistically do much - increase tax on fuels? Sure so long as the population won't bellyache when everything goes up in price because of increased production costs, factory fuel costs, distribution costs and so on.
As you also say, until China and the USA make an effort we really are just pi**ing in the wind here.
Do the protestors even understand the reality of some of the alternatives?
Hybrid cars use more energy in producing their batteries than they will ever save over their lifetime. Until greener ways of making batteries are discovered, the enironmental damage outweighs their benefits on a typical car.
In most countries, all but the very best (and dearest) solar cells will have lost their ability to generate electricity BEFORE they reach a break-even point of energy generated over the energy required to make them in the first place - maing ultra pure silicon takes a fair bit of power.
Even recycling is mostly BAD news for the environment. Making a plastic bottle from old plastic bottles uses more oil (as power) to re-make the bottle than simply making one from scratch.
As always , nutters with half answers and loud lungs get heard more clearly than quieter thinking people.
If we cant get the other countries to do something as well then we r all stuffed, however I think that we have destroyed the world too much already, so basically we r already doomed.
But we have to set an example. I do everything I can to be environmentally friendly. It makes ME feel like I`m doing MY bit. The Yanks and Chinks are way behind and should hang their heads in shame.
If we have any understanding and any conscience, we have to do our bit, even if it only small. Agreed, there are many greater problems in larger countries but we need to set some kind of example surely?
It doesnt matter if you are a small, insignificant country. Everyone has to do their part to make the environment a more hospitable one. I recycle and have been a vegetarian for many, many years. We can all do something. We arent helpless!
rather than burning coal , burn the protesters instead , much cleaner
When I was growing up it was "the nuclear bomb will get us" then it was the cold war. After was a comit will hit us, then Japan will wipe us out economically and we will all die. Somewhere in between was AIDS then Later came Bin laden and his bunch of losers.
Now Global warming!
Global warming will correct itself if it does happen indeed. So lots of us will die, stop making carbon and the world will right itself.
I wonder what will be the next horseman.
At least try to make an effort (Is what our government could do)
They're stupid. Did the governments take any notice over marches over the war in iraq, so will America take notice of this?
They can't do anything about it. No matter how much evergy you or your country uses, everybody has to do something about it. And besides, have you ever thought of the fact that per capita, you could potentially be contributing more than the Chinese? True, they have more people, but most don't use that much coal, or gas. Person for person, Canadians, British, even people from Qatar put out more greenhouse gases.
Britain has the fourth largest economy in the world, so though we may be a weedy little island geographically, what we do still carries some clout globally. I agree with many of the others here - we have to do our bit (and don't forget, we're not alone - there are other countries, especially in Europe, with very high recycling rates, etc). Remember as well that in the US, individual states like Califormia are introducing their own environmental legislation which resembles that of the Kyoto agreement in terms of improving energy efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions. The US will go green eventually, even if it's state by state. And even in China, there's a number of environmental projects taking place which offer some, small hope for future action on emissions there.
Zack that's very eloquent of you, a very grown up question too, usually your contributions are full of insults and profanities! Take ya point tho, we are just tiny weeny, America is responsible for most of the worlds probs tho so no change there.
If light is constant and doesn't end, then how come a light source dims with distance?
What do you think of the clocks going back sun morn?
can you tell me what 649 dollars are in pounds sterling?
Does drinking blood harm your body? Is there any scientific reasons? Please provide any sites or articles.?
what would happen if an unstoppable force meets an imoveable object?
Why do clocks run clockwise?
Hi, I have come across a Telescope called Zhumell. Anyone know how good these 'scopes are, as I might buy.
i have been told that flax has been grown in my area in the UK, what is it used for?
