Why don't we fill all the pit mines up with rubbish and safe the landfill sites?
Answers:
There would be no point, and it would be far more dangerous.
Landfill sites are typically created in specific geological lithologies - generally clay traps, where rainfall and minor subsurface water flow are trapped at the boundary and cannot pass into the surrounding hydrogeological system.
If the mine you're dumping garbage into is hard-rock (i.e. copper, zinc, etc), development is in basement rock, and water would easily pass through the refuse and leach through the rock into the groundwater system. If it's an open pit, then it would be exactly the same as a garbage dump without the advantage of the clay trap boundary.
Because it would be very expensive to do that and also there would be pressure groups from say Wales, Newcastle that would not want everyones rubbish dumped in their area.
Good point
I think its a brilliant idea on the face of it, but I suspect it would be too expensive.
Because it would be easy to fill the shaft up but how would you get it to go 1,000s of yards horizontally and how would you safely get rid of the gases produced.
Why do that when we could cap the mines and take the gas to use as fuel for creating electricity.
A lot of mines have water running through them.
Therefore, if you put hazardous waste in these mines then the water that we drink will be contaminated.
Do you fancy drinking the water that has been through a landfill site?
If they are not flooded we are goner use them some day
Very difficult to achieve as only a small part of a mine is big enough to run a small vehicle though. For the majority of the mine its only big enough to fit a few people in at a time .and to transport the waste from the surface to the end of the mine shafts would be ni on impossible .and massively costly not to mention the water contamination. There is also another problem many mines are sealed when not in use and some flooded ,So to re-open them would mean billions of pounds and would only hold about a month or so waist if that .
PS The best way is to go down the recycle path
