How to use a dial caliper?
Answers:
With the caliper closed.. Zero the dial, then when taking a measurement be carefull to keep the track along the length clean or sometimes the tiny wheel that drives the dial will "jump" so you might get a false reading
is that american?!?
The dial only reads the last two figures of a dimension. You need to read the slide first then add the dial reading.
I've solved this problem by buying a digital readout caliper which displays the whole answer!
£9.99 from Maplin.
If you want real problems in reading a caliper get a vernier one. They read in whole numbers then 0.25ths and then you have to add between zero and 0.25 on the vernier! Try adding 18 to 75 on the fly.

THE DIAL MUST BE ZEROED WHEN THE CALLIPERS ARE FULLY CLOSED. PLACE THE POINTS IN INSIDE AN OBJECT AND WHEEL OPEN UNTIL THE POINTER TOUCH BOTH INSIDE EDGES. THIS WILL GIVE THE INTERNAL DIAMETER I.D. OR SIZE.
THE OUT SIDE IS MEASURED BY EXPANDING LARGER THAN THE OBJECT AND WHEELING IN UNTIL BOTH POINTERS TOUCH GIVING THE OUTSIDE DIAMETER O.D. OR MEASUREMENT. READING THE DIAL WILL GIVE AN ACCURATE MEASUREMENT
Your all wrong - its an adjustable spanner.
