My house is built on an old landfill site. what can i use as an alternative to clay to stop the gas escaping?
i am trying to level my garden. which means digging down two feet into the clay which has been put down to stop the methane gas escaping. i want to no what alternative i have?

The only real alternative is gas-proof membranes. These are extremely expensive, and require specialist fitting to ensure a good seal. They are normally used in the construction of floor slabs, rarely in a garden of landscape situation.
It might be a good idea to contact your local council, or the local office of the Environment Agency, before you go poking around in gas protection!
