The amount of time and money you will spend solving what really is a non-problem will be out of all proportion to the 'advantages' you hope to gain. Level the garden and get on with planting etc.? Do you like in Thurrock? Some of England's best landfills are here!

You reside atop a gold mine, friend. why would you want to prevent methane gases from extruding from the soil?
Rather than plant potatoes or onions, plant a methane gas converter/tank, and reap the financial rewards.

Rubber sheet. But don't.

1. Terraces. Terrace your garden instead of leveling it.
or
2. Dig deeper than you need to, and save the clay. Then restore the clay layer at a new depth, keeping continuity with the parts you didn't dig, and put your topsoil over it.
or
3. Let the methane out. Imagine having tiki torches that run forever!
I dont think i would seal that off methane is very violate, but you may consider of building a small lake over the spot, this will allow the gas to escape and avoid a build up that could explode and kill someone,or maybe the local state enivormental agencymay give some ideals on how you could capture this gas and use it in your home.I love gardening and really dont see how the gas would hurt it escaping into the atmosphere.Wish i had more ideals.
I'd move, methane is odorless, explosive and dangerous to inhale, you can't tap it and sell it, you'll blow up, and what about the possibility of Radon gas ? I think that you're begging for cancer, living on top of a land fill with "God knows" what in it ! Look up "LOVE CANAL" on google search, I think you should really think about moving for your health !
Really . don't do this it is a bad idea. Let your garden have some shape to it.
Get some top soil, you can order it by the ton. It will be good quality soil so you will be able to have a lovely garden. Measure your garden, and you will need about 3-4" in depth. The people you order your top soil from should be able to help you with how many tons of soil you need.
