How do u calculate the mean deviation...is it the same as standard deviation?

Answers:
If you mean the mean square deviation (which im guessng you do as the mean is just reffered to as the mean.not mean deviation) the it is quite similar to the standard deviation just it requires less work.
All you need to do is find the some of the squares for your data set. This means for your first bit of data take the mean from it and square the result then do the same to the second, third and so on. Now add all the results up. If you have a scientific calculator find the instruction as the calculator can do this for you which is very hand and much quicker!
Ok now thats done all you need is to divide the answer by the amount of data you have (so for 1,2,5,4 you would divide by 4)
Hope that helped!
hi, the mean deviation is just getting the average deviation from a group of numbers (other deviations).like 2+2+2+2=8.the mean number would be the total divided by the amount of numbers..that help?
Mean deviation isn't the same as standard deviation.

Mean deviation is the name mostly used for what is strictly the 'mean absolute deviation'.

To compute the mean deviation of a set of values you first need to work out the mean of that set.

You then take the absolute difference between each value in the set and the mean (ie the difference ignoring the sign).

Then work out the mean of those absolute differences and that is the mean deviation.

So unlike standard deviation, there is no squaring and square-rooting involved.

(I read on wikipedia that the mean deviation also is sometimes computed using absolute difference from the median or other central tendency measure, rather than the difference from the mean.)

Using the numbers 2,3,5,7,11,13,17,19 as your values
SD =5.977823601
SE =5.375

so they don't compute to same value (not that one would really expect them to).
