Global warming and other green issues?
who thinks this stuff is a load of nonsence dreamed up by politicians and the like to extract more money out of us in taxes. i say enough is enough we are being squeezed dry by ever increasing tax burdens. the fact that the planet is warming up is just part of the natural rythm of nature. what do you think.
Answers:
There's definitely a "Global Warming Industry" now that exists to make money out of fear. And it's succeeding because the idea that we ourselves are causing a great threat to the earth is in a lot of people's interests to promote. Politicians can use it as a way of upping taxes and going "not my fault, nature made me do it". Green cranks can suddenly get on TV with their views when 10 years ago everyone thought they were bonkers. Even car manufacturers can make "green" models that aren't very good and cost far too much, because people have suddenly come around to paying a premium for a cr*p car because it's for "the environment"
The problem I see is that we'll waste all our money and effort trying to cool the world down, and when that doesn't work we'll have rising sea levels and awful weather anyway, but whereas we would have had the resources to deal with it, we now don't have any industry or technology because we shut it all down to save on carbon.
Then we'll be stuffed.
No, it isn't.
The planet is warming up through excessive polution and destruction of rainforests and over reliance on fossil fuels.
If you can read, stop being so cynical and blaming everyone else.and research the problem properly.
Too much effort? Thought it might be.
You're right in saying that global warming is a natural cycle. However, there's no denying that our civilization has and is definitely contributing to the severity and speed of climate change.
Though Blair believes the eyes of the world are constantly staring at the UK for answers, they're not. No matter what we do in this country it is irrelevant to China/India/Brazil and the Billions there wanting Western levels of consumption. But sadly, as is the New Labour way, they'll think of new ways of bleeding us white and telling us its for our own good.
dude try this experiment, i promise it will be fun.
please note, anyone under 13 please dont try this at home...
ok, get a balloon, an areosol can, a lighter, a needle, and a bucket of water.
take the can and fill up the balloon, this can be trickey.
then tie a not in the balloon and grab your lighter, place the balloon CAREFULLY on the floor, light the lighter and then prick the balloon.
now run over to the bucket of water stick your head in it to put out the fire, when you stand up go to a mirror take a good long hard look at your face. this is nothing compared to what the sun would do to you with out the ozone.
once you done that test and asked your self this question, and you still believe it dosnt matter, then come back to me.
Hate to wade into this politicized quagmire, but I must say that I agree with you to the extent that this is a political-tax scam.
The people who go on the most loudly about green issues, I find, are often don't know the first thing of what they are talking about.
I disagree that *all* of it is a "load of nonsence". On the contrary, global-warming makes common sense. However, what, if anything should be done about it is completely in question.
Bottom-line: The only people who are cool and intensely knowledgeable about the various subjects will not be able to package their conclusions for consumption by the average person. The folks who deliver the news about these subjects invariably have an economic/political chip on their shoulders.
I agree that its just a scam to make money. Although I believe that the planet is being damaged by harmful emissions, I also think that a global effort is needed to make a difference, Britain makes up just 2% of the harmful emissions so all this tax and price increases is not going to make a whole lot of difference when the countries who have the highest emmisions aren't going to do a damn thing about it! The government are using it as an excuse to retract all the policies they had which made people vote for them in the first place. For example- trying to eradicate poverty. By taxing everyone up to the eyeballs, the will force the country into a recession making the already poor, even poorer. And when Labour does away with the state pension, we will have a nation of poverty stricken old people as noone will have been able to pay into a private pension. My research project at college also showed that people are more likely to commit crimes when they come from a deprived background. Whether this is true or not- it cant be good news for our already crowded prisons. Funny enough, Blair also said he would build more prisons and hasnt. The government are going to make it difficult and more expensive to conform to new 'green' legislation by increasing prices of non-energy efficient products rather than decreasing the price of energy efficient ones. If the planets welfare was really at heart, they wouldnt make it so hard. Blair needs to look at this in relation to his other policies and let me know where they all fit together because this isnt the government I voted for! The only policies he seems to implement are the ones that make him money.
I disagree with you:). The facts are in.
We are and have been in the latter stages of the last ice age.(warming stage). This when natural is gradual and takes thousands of years to complete. However the current warming trend is speeding up, and the proof is there that humans are doing it.
Global warming is now eating away at the seacoast world wide, and many small island nations will disappear while large ones like Indonesia will suffer huge loss of ;land mass.
We could with in 25 years see the beginning of the end of most of Holland, Malaysia, Pakistan, Cuba, and the other Islands of the seas and oceans.
We will see a huge loss o Land on the USA shore line and it is already happening.
I can see this in places like panacea Florida, and every where on the Gulf Coast where the ocean has reclaimed land over the last few years.
Areas where we use do to swim and fish, picnic, camp on the gulf are now under water.. The roads were moved as the water took it,Homes are now built on the new beaches created by flooding but are basically right on the water level, and will be taken by the sea.
I know that the North Georgia mountains which used to be covered with snow in my mothers childhood all winter are now nearly snow less every year, and as a 20 year drought works on the area you can expect them to eventually end up looking like Afghanistan.
Just go read soem old encyclopedias, old books , films and check the history of our climate 40 years ago and compare them with todays. Talk with people (if you don't) who were raised in cold weather areas like New York, Wisconsin and ask thenm about the changes in weather, in the last 20 to 50 years. You could be very surprised, and become a beleiver.
You are correct in realizing that Earth is a dynamic planet and always changing. This is not Venus. The fossil record shows that over a period of a billion years, the Earths climate was predominantly warmer interrupted by glacial periods. During the warmer climes the salinity of oceans decreased due to ice cap melting. Fantastic as this may seem that turns out to be very good for marine life as is witnessed in the fossil record. They were periods of species diversification due to an opportunity for life forms to divert their energies previously tied up in salinity stresses. It is also noted that individual sizes increase. As oceans are dilluted with more water, its use as a solvent of oxygen increases. Metabolisms can pick up the pace a little.
On the matter of weather, it is too easy to equate greater overall energy to more violent weather. As the polar regions should conflict less against equatorial regions mixing of hot and cold at their contact should become more poorly defined thus less violent. The total energy around the globe should become more evenly distributed and less turbid.
So what is our problem? As a species, we have evolved only during the recent glacial and interglacial periods. Can we adapt quickly to the environment new to us? Ocean levels certainly will rise if they are not already doing so, and not only living space will be lost. Vast agricultural areas will also be lost. In fact, we are going to have to learn how and what to grow all over again. Imagine finding the crop for the previously temperate regions to grow in warmer overall temperature conditions but regions that will not change in terms of the amount of light available in winter.
Personally I think that the human species has not yet attained the qualification of predicting outcomes for our mistakes let alone outcomes for premeditated efforts to correct them.
We are however more likely capable of finding new ways to adapt to these changes and perhaps even enjoying it.
The latter is the direction I believe our energies should be focused for success.
Sorry for rambling . Thanks for your time.
I believe a combination of both man and nature. What the press or governments don't tell us, GW is accelerated by the world being over-populated. More people equals more consumption and we are at a stage where the demand for materials outstrips supply, we now need 3x our planet to live by. By 2016, yes 2016 we will be at a stage where climate change will be out of control and we then can do nothing but live the playout. We may be trying to take steps to offset this with energy saving ideas but it might yet be "too little too late."
Isn't it funny that no media can make overpop a world headline!
I made a prediction back in 1991 that the year 2016 will be the year the world will receive its biggest wake up call in respect of GW.
Even if you want to completely disbelieve that global warming is true, we have limited fossil fuels, we are very inefficient at the way we use them, and could save money by taking steps to reduce our CO2 emmsions.

eeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr did you know?
if you took a compass into space what direction would it face?
how worried are you about global warming?
Is woocky hole a place name or an affliction?
Are Humans a Cancer of Planet Earth?
If freezing food makes it last longer, do we live longer if we keep cold?
What time is it where you are?
Why is the Manhattan distance so called?
