How does a starport runway work?

Answers:
i missed that episode of startrek when you find out can you email it to me?
vertically?
No such thing.
If you are talking about fiction then it works however the author wants it to.
if you mean like where current space shuttles take off, well on take off they are rooted vertically so all the thrust is pointing down to provide alot of lift and when they land its jus like a normal runway, except alot longer, and the shuttles still need parachutes to slow them down.
