How long can the average person survive, buried in a coffin? e.g how long would the airsupply last?

Answers:
About 4 hours or so, maybe a little longer IF the person could stay calm enough to keep their breathing slow and not use up the oxygen too fast. Of course as the oxygen levels get lower, the heartrate would speed up in an effort to get more oxygen to the body, which would, in turn, speed up the brething causing the air to run out faster.

They actually did a test of such on the Discovery channel show Mythbusters a year or so back..and thats what the projection showed form the rate of oxygen usage during their tests..
They say about 4 hours.
about 3-4 hours
I would guess no more than 1 hr or less.

I would have a panic attack and die of heart attack.
there is no "average" in that scenario. Are you a young serial killer? no pointers from the peanut gallery..
if anyone answer this they are a liar, i dont care about no physics, untill u get your @ss in a coffin and die then tell us
what a terrible thought, I feel for the person in there. But I think in 6hr. max. all is over.
if your dead, why does it matter
What a creepy question, who on earth would know or even 'want' to know that!
Probably about maybe 2 hours 2 and a half hours.Around there. You would probably die from too much carbon dioxide that you are breathing out and that you don't have a lot of oygen when you breathe in again.
Depends on if you flip out when they toss the first shovel full on if you do you won't have long.
I think probably the most will be 15 minutes.
Estimated around three hours, possibly shorter depending on how deeply the person breathed. Or how much the person panics.
One fart and you are dead!
8 hours
Less time than you would think! It's no good measuring the volume of air used in a given time and extrapolating the results to match the volume in the coffin (minus the space taken by the body of the person). This wouldnt work because of the panic factor. The person would hyperventilate as panic set in thus not only breathing the air faster but suffering from the effects of excess CO2 well before the lack of oxygen killed them..
They did this on Mythbusters buried under soil, the coffin started to collapse before the air ran out, He lasted about 30 minutes and it was a steel coffin and it really scared him!
Unburied in a sealed coffin, he was pulled out after 50 minutes because of medical problems so maybe 60 minutes tops.

Yeh I'd say most films are far-fetched when they portray similar story lines!
Does the coffin have to be airtight?
If not, you can survive very long.
What a terrible way to go.. Is this category general science and math or is it torturers' corner?
I heard it is 3 hours in a coffin, 3 days without water & 3 weeks without food
When you're buried, the earth packs around the coffin therefore, cutting off the oxygen supply to the coffin.

Now how long a person can survive depends on the dimensions and thus the volume of the coffin since a bigger coffin would mean more air supply.

Also, you have to factor in heat. Because when you start feeling warm, you tend to breathe faster and more energy is used to cool your body.

Another would be if you panic and thus start hyperventilating. You'd be using up the air at a faster rate.

Generally though, only a handful of hours.
